Ooh, you'd be good at filling the librarian role, Jean. A bit of practice in the past, I think?

Ssshh Gill! ;) My difficulty, as I once said to Leslie, is that I'll find it hard to know when to stop! I'll have to set a time limit I think. Silly to just avoid it when these sort of mistakes irk me so much, though.
How about it, Gill? Or perhaps you find it easier to have a more relaxed attitude ...
I must admit there's only been one or two occasions when I've seen something I thought should be changed. It certainly doesn't irk me at all.
Ah! Mañana ...... and yes, I did have to cut and paste from somewhere to get that little accent over the "n". Just call me incorrigible ;)
Jean wrote: "Now you're just showing off Gill! LOL! (And I hope that wasn't a swear word in Esperanto!)"So do I!
Mary Shelley is also in as Mary Shelley - Retold by Patrick Nobes author should be in as Patricia Nobes??? and also in as Mary Shelley - Frankenstein. She is also listed as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley but maybe that is how the books were published.
Also in as Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley - Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was her mother's name, not hers.
B the BookAddict wrote: "Mary Shelley is also in as Mary Shelley - Retold by Patrick Nobes author should be in as Patricia Nobes??? and also in as [author:Mary Shelley - Frankenstein|141333..."I have done the first two and the last.
I don't have time to do the third right now because then I should also combine all the books and this would be very long! I hope someone else has time otherwise you can also ask in the Librarians group, there are much more librarians that can help.
B the BookAddict wrote: "Thanks, dely."I asked in the librarian group to merge the two profiles by Mary Shelley. I hope someone will help.
B the BookAddict wrote: "@dely Thanks for that extra bit of help:)"You're welcome! Even I don't like it if I see the author pages messed up.
OK I was approved this morning (it's taken about 3 weeks, in case anyone wants to apply) and have been beavering away. As I suspected it ate a substantial chunk into my reading time :( But the other librarians are very keen to help and ensure that I am obeying all the nuances in the librarians' manual. How some people have time to do an actual job as well as all this I shall never know. LOL!
Congratulations Jean. I am sure you will be excellent
Thanks - it's addictive, as I feared ... must get out and enjoy this sunshine. I can hear every parents' voice in my head, "What are you doing indoors on a day like this?"Anyway, I'll try to call in on this thread now and then to help :)
Edit - LOL! I have just read your profile Susan. Two minds with but a single thought :D
That's good, Jean. Well done! And make sure you leave yourself a little bit of time for reading books!

Great! But you will have enough time during winter to do the librarian, now go out and enjoy the sunny days.
That's why I wont apply, Jean. I'm so obsessive I'd be on Goodreads probably for the bulk of the day (and night), trying to fix all the errors. I'm selfish enough now to want to devote time to my own wants.
You could be me up to about 3 weeks ago Bette! The urge to help "put things right" finally got me, though ;) Keeping it in its place and not letting it take over will be good discipline for me :)
When referencing Marlon Brando as part of the This Day In Lit Hist today, I found the following: Last Tango in Paris/X VHS . This is indeed an entry for a VHS tape; can someone please delete this entry? Ta!
Could someone please merge these two listings:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
I inadvertently created a duplicate of this edition, because the author's name was mispelled as "Moorehouse". I had the spelling corrected through the Libarians Group.
Thanks!

Done.

Someone did it. If the vhs has an isbn then it can stay on GR, it mustn't be deleted but it must be "NABbed": https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/1...
@dely What a convoluted method that is and all because someone has clearly no idea what constitutes a book and what doesn't. Kinda seems quite obvious to me - a book is a book and a video tape is a video tape:P

I hope you do spend some time outside enjoying the summer though! :-)
Could somebody please change the date first published for George Orwell's Coming up for Air. It's showing as 1391, it should be 1949. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...
Thanks
Tee hee - just happened to be lookin' ;)Don't think I've ever said the sentence "1949 was 1984" before though ...

There are some errors on the following author book list: https://www.goodreads.com/author/list...Sara Henderson died in 2005, she was an Australian who wrote books about her bullock station in West Aust. see Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sara_He...
The kid's books on the author page must belong to another Sara Henderson, they are published three years after the Aust Sara Henderson died. They are also self-published whereas the 'real' Sara has well-known publishers.
Someone has done some sloppy inputting here, can you help?
I'll take a look Bette. Later: I think that I have fixed it. It was a new experience for me - interesting! I also added a bit of the biographical information from the Wikipedia article to distinguish her from the children's book author for anyone added more books in the future.
The rules are very strict. I can't find anything in the manual which allows us to use Wiki, whereas we can lift info direct from Amazon (as they now own Goodreads.) To be safe, I write my own material if I look at Wiki. Wiki itself is unfortunately not in the list of acceptable sources for book data. Is that why you put a link to it, Leslie? For photos specifically, the superlibrarians told me yesterday,
"In general, the only acceptable sources for an author's photo are the author themselves (with permission), the copyright holder of a photo (with permission), or a photo in the public domain
which is really difficult when you're looking at modern authors - and very annoying considering the wealth of material there is easily available. I may be able to paraphrase, but I don't propose to start drawing my own picures ... ;)
Jean wrote: "The rules are very strict. I can't find anything in the manual which allows us to use Wiki, whereas we can lift info direct from Amazon (as they now own Goodreads.) To be safe, I write my own mater..."I only put in the dates and country. I added the link rather than try to paraphrase the other info. But as previously there was no info at all, I figured even that minimal amount should help prevent confusion with this other Sara Henderson. One thing I learned which I thought was nifty was how to disambiguate (?) by creating another author with what looks like the same name -- you put in an additional space between the first and second name!
I believe your 'space' idea is the correct way to distinguish between authors of the same name. Thanks for fixing this error. It really bugs me when I find glaring errors like this one was. Another reason I have not become a Librarian, I'd be running around wanting to slap people for their mistakes, lol.
Yes, I read about extra spaces in the manual before I ever did anything, but actually I knew that already as Chris had to have an extra space put in his author's name, before he eventually decided to go with a middle initial. Ithink dely might have mentioned it in this thread as well (?)Would you believe I merged over 20 separate wrong author entries for Hablot Knight Browne a couple of days ago?! Not 20 books - goodness knows how many books were associated with the author pages! I could not believe just how many variations on a theme there were. Initials, the penname "Phiz" entered in various places, with or without inverted commas, square or round brackets - never mind the ones which were merely misspellings! Now hopefully there is just one.
And when I added an entire series I discovered that if you use parentheses (round brackets) in the title, then the series title overrides it, and that part does not show up in the book page, but only when you edit it! In order for it to be displayed you have to use square ones!
The manual is very complex - though not completely comprehensive (eg. it doesn't mention annuals, which were very popular in Britain during the 1940-1960's. I had to get a special judgement made on that!)
Yes!! Though in that case I could understand people's thinking - mostly they just hadn't checked what was there already.
B the BookAddict wrote: "@Jean Some of the numbers of errors in one author can drive you nuts, can't they:)"Yes, sometimes I have to metaphorically sit on my hands to prevent myself from spending too much time trying to fix things. Lately I have been annoyed by the many John D. MacDonald titles which someone added with improperly formatted titles, like this one:
Quick Red Fox, The
I have already spent several hours trying to clean that mess up before deciding not to waste any more time on it.

I think I fixed it.

Thanks, Leslie. Now to read it!
