Sarah | 18549 comments Well I can tick the box on the fry up. Looks like my post showed up twice for some reason - how bizarre!

message 402: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Most important box ticked then Sarah.

We've had a funny year too Peggy. The Blue Mountains has particularly been strange. It was on fire this week last year, in a ridiculously early, strange and intense bushfire. This year, it was under a layer of snow. Increase in extreme weather events = Aus. The climate is going berko down here, but don't expect a polly to agree or doing anything about it.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Cue messed up world by the pretty reckless. Its a messed yp world what do ya get from it. Must be nice to see me sing this to you without hearing me

message 404: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Good morning everyone!!! Happy Toppler day :-) it is gorgeous here in Virginia today! My hubby, dog and I are going to check out the fall foliage this morning along Skyline drive! I am new to the area here in Virginia and am super excited! I believe the forest is Shenandoah?? Have a great day all!!

message 405: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Been very wet and windy lately where I live, with thunderstorms too. Nice to have a pyjama day today, where I don't have to go out, and I can start reading for the Toppler in two and a half hours.

I'm sure you have a lovely singing voice.

message 407: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Forget the YLTO "Gloss the Glossary" thread. We need a "What the heck did Rusalka say?" thread.

Trackydacks I surmise are sweats, pj bottoms, or something similar.

message 408: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I assumed trackydacks were tracky (tracksuit) bottoms (which I'm assuming are sweats to you Janice).

message 409: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I imagined tracksuit bottoms - which I think is the same as what you call sweats.

Ah yes, Urban Dictionary to the rescue: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define...

message 410: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Hehe - great minds think alike!

message 411: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Our posts must have crossed Gail!

So I figured trackydacks but I had to go look up what polly was (I assumed bird) but means Politician!

message 412: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Ah, I knew polly - but I have Australian friends on Facebook. Never heard trackydacks before though, but I like it - I love wearing my trackydacks. :-)

Yes, we call those sweats.

message 414: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Just found this: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendi...

Some of these terms we also use in the UK, but some are new to me. I particularly like fart-slicer! :D

message 415: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments When my client arrived, he informed me there was a man passed out in the foyer of the apartment building. (9:00 in the morning) So I phoned security. "We'll get to it when we can", was what I was told. When my client left, the drunk was also gone and the security vehicle was just leaving. I think it's time to think about moving out. There's zero vacancy for rentals right now. There is a brand new apartment building being built, so I'm going to do a drive by and get some info off the sign to see if I can get in. I hope they take pets!

message 416: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We say foy yay. Yet the book i listened to said fo yur . Kind of . how do the rest of you pronounce foyer

message 417: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Foy-yay.

message 418: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I say foy-yay. I've heard fo-yur though, but not in the UK. I thought it was an American pronunciation.

message 419: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm in uostate New York and we say foy yay but states are diverse with pronunciation

message 420: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments foy yay for me too (UK)!

message 421: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Peggy wrote: "Thanks for the offer Tasha, but I think I pass ;-)"

It was worth a try. ;)

Sounds like you are having a great day!

Baby showers are not fun.

message 422: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My wife wanted a jack and jill baby shower. We had a barbeque then the women did gifts and the men drank beer. Take it this isnt standard baby shower?

message 423: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I have heard both foy-yay and -yer but I always assumed that was because I live in Georgia.

It is beautiful here today too. I am sitting outside enjoying warm sun and a cool breeze while I wait for the rival high school theater to open. It's one-act competiton day. My daughters school goes up last (three more hours!) but I missed the first half of the day as I was in training. Hubby is texting me and it sounds like I am lucky to be missing the production going on right now. Poor kids. Lots of sets and costumes and maybe not so much acting.

message 424: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I ran my first 5K race and had a lot of fun. Never thought I would be doing this...

message 425: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Good job, Tasha! :)

message 426: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Love this thread. I just came home after a trip to Sports Authority to buy a couple more pair of trackydacks. I say foy-yay but sometimes it's a vestibule.

Janice, when there are drunks in the foyer at 9am, it's definitely time to pack.

Travis, sounds like a fun shower to me.

message 427: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I remember 'vestibule' - when I was five, that is what my school called its foyer! Haven't heard it since then!

message 428: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I always associated vestibules with churches for some reason.

foy-yay is closer to the French pronunciation and, as it's a French word, I would say go for this one.

message 431: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Daughter's play did not place in the competition. :( But it was definitely the crowd favorite. Too bad for them. I suspect it was not "theatrical" enough for the judges.

Tasha, well done on the 5k!

message 432: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Oct 18, 2014 05:35PM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sorry. the later it gets, I stop filtering.

Yes, trackydacks = tracksuit pants. Dacks = pants. If you get dacked, means someone pulled your pants down on you.

Polly = politician. Too many syllables. Mind you, they act like a bunch of galahs (ridiculously stupid pink and grey parrot) at the moment, so parrots work too.

Foyer is pronounced foy-yer. You're all wrong :P

That's the proper baby shower for me Travis, but everyone drinks beer (unfortunately not the person who's party it is though) and eats, and there's no gender segregation.

Janice, maybe your guy had been at one of Travis' baby showers? But definitely time to start looking I say.

ROFL. Absolutely!

message 435: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments There was this test on facebook last week on the meaning of Aussie words. 15 words, 4 answering options each. I think I had 9/15, bf had 14 though!

I'll see if I can find the link later.

message 436: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lol, i am glad I cause you all such amusement, although with added confusion! It is funny how often I actually type a comment and then have to edit it to be clearer.

I'll have to check out this quiz and see if it's legit ;)

message 437: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I finally got my first bookshelf made. So I am up for some huge work. Cataloguing my books and organizing them.

I could use some ideas here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 440: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Wow I can't find a good youtube video of MC Hammer's "too legit to quit" anywhere so I guess I'm the only one with that stuck in my head. Thanks for using legit this is what happens. Hammertime

message 443: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Found it!

I think some words are not specific to Australia, but most are.

message 444: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I got one (the second one) wrong (view spoiler) But no one uses it.

message 445: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Oct 19, 2014 04:55AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Also, "chucking a wobbly" is different to being "wobbly". Just so you know. Important distinctions here peoples.

message 446: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Hehe - we say 'throwing a wobbly' in the UK.

I got 'pretty impressive, mate' on the quiz, but some of those words are UK slang too. I remember 'chunder' becoming popular here about 25 years ago (probably from Neighbours or Home and Away!), but I haven't heard it in years now.

message 447: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I haven't heard chunder for a while I must say. Technicolour yawn is a good euphemism. But the commonly used one is spew.

message 448: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I think most people say puke or spew here. Young people use 'vom'.

message 449: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments An Australian friend of mine online sometimes calls me a 'dag' - which kinda sounds like it's an insult, but she assures me it's affectionate!

message 450: by Lisa (last edited Oct 19, 2014 06:11AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I got "Pretty impressive mate" on the quiz too. Paying attention to the Fosters Lager tv adverts with those two 'problem solving' Aussie guys has obviously come in handy with the slang :)
