Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My father in laws family just went yhrough this a while back. Finally just told his parents they were moving to Georgia to live with his sister. Both his parents were 95 and both are still alive. It was 2 years of trying to convince them they couldn't or shouldn't live alone. Finally they just had to say this is how it is and aftrr some adjustment I think they are getting along fine now.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments We are having a quiet Christmas again this year. Me and my parents are going round to a friend's house on Christmas Day for dinner and so on. I think there is only going to be 5 (possibly 6) of us altogether.

Tasha Janice, that is such a hard thing to have to do. I hope it all works out ok.

Well, that is about a dog and a soldier, but not a soldier that handles dogs. I read them both last year.

LOL Travis! Funny you should say that about the kids. Amy said that all of the people with kids got to go to the front of the line when they started the book signing. Who knew?

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I'm watching Top Chef and the challenge is to create a dish inspired by one of the classic authors - Poe, Dickenson, Hawthorne, Suess... and a few others.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Just realize the lamb leg we'll grill on Christmas is form Australia, so we'll have an Aussie Christmas, Rusalka.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments How is Lexx doing Rusalka?

I'm all excited because for the last few days we've been thinking about were to go on holiday next summer (we always get the urge to make plans in December). We had a shortlist of 7 countries and have now officially decided: Cuba! We'll rent a car and travel around a bit. Can't wait!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'd never been there, but it is suppose to be a beautiful place, Peggy!

My friend's mum went to Cuba on holiday about a month ago. She loved it there and said it was really beautiful, the weather was amazing etc. I bet you will have a wonderful time Peggy! :)

message 1165: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm curious about how Lexx is doing too. Hope things are progressing well. :)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sandra wrote: "Just realize the lamb leg we'll grill on Christmas is form Australia, so we'll have an Aussie Christmas, Rusalka."

Hehe yum! Australian Christmas food is so ridiculously varied. No idea what we'll be having. Only thing that is a must in aussie Christmases is there is lots and lots of food. But it goes from our cold seafood (prawns, bugs, oysters), to fish, to traditional turkey and ham, to any random cultural foods, to christmas puddings, to pavlova, to summer puddings.

It's insane. But a nice nod to where we all come from, but then the acknowledgement finally to cooking traditional Northern hemisphere food when it's 36C is fricking stupid.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lexx got discharged at 9am yesterday. We left the hospital at 2pm, after waiting for the papers and the drugs. We came home and he slept while I drove around town getting the last of the presents. Then we went to our "House Christmas" we have every year which is our old housemates and their partners. We used to have Christmas as a house a couple of days before when we lived together and have continued it since. But it was very subdued for us this year, being on a Friday night after people had finished work, one of us 9 months pregnant, Lexx walking like an old man and drinking little, me sick and exhausted. But it was a lovely night.

Our old housemates live above Lexx's sister's bakery, so we went downstairs to say hi as she was there from 9pm making millions of mince pies, and turns out all his family was down there partying, while his sister and her head baker where knocking out croissant pastry and shortbread. So not bad for someone who had just had bits of him removed.

I've woken up this morning, nearly kicked the cold finally I've had all week, but my voice has completely gone. The night in Emergency shot it, and I've been holding on since. It was only a matter of time. My family's Christmas is tonight before we and my brother go away to other states, so Mum, step father and 2 brothers get what they have wanted for years for Christmas. Rusalka to shut the hell up.

message 1169: by Stephanie (new)

message 1183: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Calendar hasn't officially reached winter but I'm on my third cold and sore throat of the season. Funny how you have to teach kids to share toys and such yet they have no problem sharing colds, stomach bugs and other assorted sickness.

message 1184: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments yes, they are kind of "fanatically generous" in this area.

message 1185: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Just an interesting follow up to that manhunt in my area for that guy who went on a rampage. My husband had a feeling that the sighting in our area was a hoax (he is ex-cop) and it turns out he was right. It seems the local cops were suspicious too but they had to respond. This guy is now in custody. I thought some of you following this story may be interested to hear what has happened since.

message 1186: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We just had an odd one. Amber alert went out for a 5 yr old boy. Claim was 2 men in ski masks broke into house and took him. Hours later police dogs found boy dead not far from house. No one is buying the abduction story. All too weird.

message 1187: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Awww! Sad story, Travis. Is it because of the time of year that we're hearing more of these stories? An amber alert was issued in Edmonton - 3 brothers were abducted. It appears to be a family member because the suspect has the same last name as the boys.

message 1188: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Travis - I just saw that story when I was checking the weather for my flight home (I grew up not far from you). Such a sad tale... grah.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I hit the stores at 8:00 this morning and was home by 10:30 - Christmas shopping done! And the stores weren't busy at all. The radio was saying that today is the busiest shopping day of the year, so I'm glad I got in and out before things got crazy.

The eggnog bread with rum glaze was quite good, but very sweet. I'd serve it with ice cream next time around.
