Sarah | 18550 comments I went to work this afternoon and took my kindle as usual. Had a bit of a read in between clients as usual. Then I had a client not turn up which happens occasionally and is really annoying but I looked at the positives - more time to read! Except by that point the battery on my kindle had died. Thought I'd download the app on my phone to read on that but there was no internet connection. Talk about a nightmare! I must start taking a real book with me places just in case. Of all the times it had to happen. So I sat twiddling my thumbs for an hour with nothing to do :-(

But I'm home now! Only 2 more sleeps until we pick up the boat. I am bouncing off the walls. At least my shoulder's recovered from my wood chopping just in time.

Only to be reinjured from bouncing off the walls?

It's such an exciting time for you. :)

Tasha Sarah, I always take a real book with me too just for that same reason. Wow, it's almost here!

Let's hope not! I might have to have a drink to calm me down a bit ;-)

Yes it is exciting times indeed. In the next 2 weeks we have to adjust to living on a boat, (in addition to making xmas dinner on it) and then there is the fact we have to drive the boat 166 miles along the canal (max speed 4 mph), going through 158 locks, over 8 aquaducts and through 2 tunnels! If my shoulders (and everything else) don't hurt by the end of that then I'll be very surprised!

message 1056: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie So exciting!! You will have to let us know how the first day on the boat goes :) good luck on the move! Hope it goes smoothly for you!!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So close Sarah! I hope you enjoy every bit of it (even the sore muscles and other small pains!) :)

I wrote a few weeks ago that my professor offered me a 1-year post-doc position. Today she told me I will get an additional year! It feels good not to have to worry about a new job for the next 2.5 years.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Congratulations, Peggy! You must be great at what you do.

I cannot wait to get updates on your journey, Sarah! Slow and steady, hahaha. Do you have to make the trip all at once, or do you have to stop at night? How does that work?

message 1067: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks!

There was a big fire near where I live last night, in the centre of a city, and this morning I woke up to the news that asbestos was released and we better not leave home and there are no trains or other public transport.

message 1068: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys - I'll keep you updated as and when I can check in.

@Cherie - Definitely stopping - the journey will take us 2 weeks in total (stopping each night to moor up at the bank which gives me time to cook and eat dinner and have a much needed nights sleep). The nights are getting in here as we approach the longest day, getting dark around 4pm so that limits the amount of hours we can do in a day - I'm not up for night driving!

Wow that's mad Peggy - I didn't realise asbestos released in to the air upon burning but it makes sense. So does that mean a day off work then ;-)

message 1069: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have a bit too much to do for a day off, if I don't want to work during the Christmas holidays. I have a few work things I can do from home :) I'll just take it easy ;-)

Ahw, all the narrowboat things sounds so romantic! Just you, your partner and a boat, navigating the waters of England...

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Grats on the longer post-doc Peggy! But boo to the fire. Very exciting about the boat Sarah. I'm looking forward to your piratey adventures. Glad the situation worked out okay Tasha. It made out new this morning too.

Me... I'm sitting here waiting to see if I have to take Lexx to hospital for appendicitis. Seems too random, not localised at the moment, but he's not a happy camper it seem. Have I mentioned recently I hate Christmas?

message 1072: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments All my best to Lexx! I hope it turns out to be something less serious.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Oh no Rusalka! I hope Lexx gets better soon!

message 1074: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Thanks Peggy. We're both hoping it's just the kebab he had for lunch (punishment for eating a kebab without getting one for me!). The problem is of course, once you start reading doctor google...
And I only did as we were both convinced the appendix was on the left side, and thought we should check. Nope. Right.

message 1075: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Fingers crossed Lexx feels better soon. Doctor google is both a miracle worker and a charlatan and is often difficult to tell which at any given time! Do you have an advice line there you can ring to see what they think you should do? We have NHS Direct phone line here (at least we used to) and you tell them the symptoms and they suggest either go to doctors, walk in centre, make your own way to a&e or call an ambulance for you. If I suspected appendicitis I think I'd go get it checked - don't forget to take a book with you if you do ;-)

message 1076: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I agree with Sarah, I think it's best to get it checked out Rusalka.

Also, we do still have that NHS Direct phone line Sarah. We used it when I fell ill back in July. It's really useful.

message 1077: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 17, 2014 03:39AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments We used to have all those things, but the governments (state and local) have cut funding. At this time at night, the only option is emergency. He reports that it hasn't gotten worse over the last couple of hours and is mainly when he moves. Also not stabby apparently just strong ache. Mind you, all second hand info of course, but if it gets worse we'll head down. And of course Sarah! It's hilarious but with all of Lexx's health issues over the years, the first thing I do is run around grabbing both our phones and both our books to shove in the bag to go to emergency.

message 1078: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's good to know Lisa - I thought it might have gone the way of the services in Australia with all the cuts we've had.

The other thing I like to do in a&e is people watch - it's really hard not to be curious about what other people have done and everyone reacts very differently to emergencies. Just to clarify, I don't just randomly rock up to a&e to do this - just on the odd times we've had to go. ;-)

message 1079: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good that you classified that last bit Sarah ;-)

I have no first-hand experience, but I think here if it's not life-threatening and it's evening or weekend, you have to call a general GP number that has GP'S on call for a greater area. They tell you what to do and whether you can come by. I think we're not even allowed to go to A&E unless it's life-threatening, and if you go there for something not life or death, you have to pay for all the costs, while insurance pays all our most of it if you go through that general GP thing first.

message 1080: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie How is Lexx feeling today (it is the morning of the 17th here) Rusalka? Hope he is feeling better!!

message 1081: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Ah the good ol er. Only place I ever end up. I broke a couple toes. You need to go to ER? Nah I'll ealk it off. I think I cracked a couple ribs. Need to go to ER. Nah barely even hurts when I breath. Couple weeks ago got my nose pounded. Still bleeding on outside where it was cut 3 hrs later. Need to go to ER for stitches or see if its broke. Nah looks straight I'll keep using band aids maybe run to store for super glue if I have to. Got a scar drom that one. Then when I'm qbout dead and go to ER dr asks how you doing I always smile and say not too bad I guess. Then they think I'm faking. Well you marked on the paperwork pain is 8 out of 10. It is I'm in agony here. You are? Yeah that's why I'm here. Then I get subkected to 5 times as many tests since they don't kbow what to make of me. I have a high pain tokerance amd hate to admit something hurts. It's always an ordeal. Now when I get a bee sting and am swelled up like a parade balloon they get right to me.

message 1082: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Wow, Peggy, that is scary. Hope it passes out soon but where will it go?? Scary stuff.

I hope Lexx is feeling better. I avoid googling symptons online. It's the only way to not get crazy. Unless I know what the issue is then I google ways to treat it naturally but other than that...I stay away from WebMD type things.

message 1083: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments lol, Travis, you made me laugh!

@Rusalka - Both my husband and my oldest daughter had "atypical" appendicitis, really hard to diagnose. To be honest, I knew before the doctors what was going on.
Only thing I would say is control his temperature. If the presents fever, even a mild one, just go to see someone.
Hope this is nothing!

message 1084: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That is indeed funny Travis. The a&e departments (and ambulance services) are over run with people who go there with very little wrong with them. Some things (like broken toes and ribs) there is nothing that can be done for - my partner had both of these over the last couple of years and just advised to take it easy and/or strap it - so I can see why you didn't bother going. A few years back my partner and I were in a karate training session and my partner stopped midway through, went and got dressed and took himself off to the a&e department (without telling me what was going on) because he had a pain in his chest - turns out his lung collapsed! The staff at the hospital all laughed that he'd driven himself there instead of ringing an ambulance.

message 1085: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments we found the well hidden health advice number and gave it a call. The nurse convinced him to head to emergency. so it's 1.30am and we're chilling in here with lots of sick babies and drunk teenagers (yr 12s got their final marks/scores this week). Lexx has been told he'll take a while to get to him. He's like you Travis. Doesn't like to make a fuss and always checks how the nurse is doing before he mentions whats wrong with him. Ah well... could be a very long night.

message 1087: by Lisa (last edited Dec 17, 2014 06:50AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments The same seems to go for the doctors surgeries here now too. It is so hard to get an appointment at my surgery these days. A lot of the time, people are going to see their GP for things like colds which can make you feel pretty rotten but there is nothing the doctor can give you for them. It makes life very difficult for people that genuinely need to see a doctor and receive treatment. I have a long term chronic health condition at the moment and have to go and see my GP fairly regularly and I am finding that I have to book an appointment a few weeks ahead in order to guarantee getting in. That's not a problem as such but it is if you need to see a doctor unexpectedly/quickly.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good luck Rusalka!

The asbestos here is being cleaned up at the moment. Latest news is that this will last until Saturday (!) and that most shops in the affected area will also stay closed until then. It's much more serious than I thought. First estimates were that cleaning would be finished tomorrow.

Eek, that's not good Peggy! There must have been a lot of asbestos released for them to keep everything closed for that long. Still, better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

message 1091: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree. It must be really bad for the shops, especially independent ones that are not part of a big chain. Lots of people still need to do their last Christmas shopping, so they must miss out on lots of sales.

Our apartment is now also in the affected area. They keep extending the area.

message 1092: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I hope Lexx gets seen quickly! Do let us know how he gets on!

Wow! Things have escalated somewhat Peggy. Stay safe! Yes I bet those small businesses will be pretty annoyed but like Lisa says best to be safe. I thought buildings with asbestos had to be rebuilt?!

Well I've just finished my last minute xmas shopping and wrapped it up so that's me done. Nothing majorly exciting for my parents but at least they have something to open. They've been great with all the boat stuff - my mum is making a xmas dinner hamper (minus the hamper) so we can have a proper dinner with all the trimmings. I wasn't going to bother.

message 1093: by Lisa (last edited Dec 17, 2014 07:11AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I know Peggy, it is absolutely the worst time of year for something like that to happen. I mean, it's not good anytime but Christmas is the time when a lot of businesses make most of their money. I suppose there is a chance that it could all be cleared up before Saturday, fingers crossed. Stay safe in the meantime! Asbestos is such a pain! When I was in secondary school, some building work was due to take place on the biggest building in our school over the summer holidays. Unfortunately they discovered asbestos in the building as the work was taking place and by the time it had all been removed, the work was nearly 3 weeks behind. When the new term started, we had to come into school on a rota basis for a few weeks as there were not enough classrooms to go round. We all thought it was great as we got extra days off but I don't think our teachers were very pleased!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments You would think 1 am on a Thursday woukd be a quiet time at the ER. Guess not with a bunch of wild Australians running around.

I had an implement fall off my tractor drawbar of at least 1000 pounds and land on my toe. Luckily there was snow under my foot for xushion. I had to stay there pinned until dad used the loader to lift it off me. The worst part was taking off the boot then very little blood so got brave and took off my sock. I didnt know if my toes were still attached or not. They were there and bent and twisted. Took 4 ibuprofen rested an hour and went back to work. Never been so happy for broke. Toes when you fear they were cut off. Had dad properly inserted the draw pin it never wpuld have fallen on me to begin with. The funny thing was dad oanicked and I'm there calm as anything giving him instructions. Get hit hard enough and you skip pain and go straight to numb

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Lucky Lisa! I've not even started! We only buy presents for our kids, since we don't have any other family near, but anyway. I know this will probably sound abnormal, but I don't like to do the Christmas shopping! Actually hate it! I love Christmas, but not have to buy gifts. I like to buy things for my kids when I want, when I have a great gift idea, when I see something I know they will love, or in their birthdays. But all this Christmas shopping thing just... gets me sick... Don't know why...

So you were the bloke that nurse wrote about in her blog! She basically said, any patient who claims he's high pain tolerant is looking for drugs, as is anyone who marks down their in significant pain yet smile and say they're not doing so bad. I'll see if I can find the blog.

My doctor's clinic will only book 2 weeks in advance. You phone and are told "sorry, he's booked solid for 2 weeks, call back tomorrow". This can go on for days. Lately he's been saving a block of appointments (late in the afternoon) that they are calling same day appointments. In order to get one, you have to phone as soon as the phones open at 8:30. By 8:35 they're all gone. Stupidest system I have ever encountered!
