Whatcha Doin'?

But I'm home now! Only 2 more sleeps until we pick up the boat. I am bouncing off the walls. At least my shoulder's recovered from my wood chopping just in time.

Only to be reinjured from bouncing off the walls?
It's such an exciting time for you. :)

Let's hope not! I might have to have a drink to calm me down a bit ;-)
Yes it is exciting times indeed. In the next 2 weeks we have to adjust to living on a boat, (in addition to making xmas dinner on it) and then there is the fact we have to drive the boat 166 miles along the canal (max speed 4 mph), going through 158 locks, over 8 aquaducts and through 2 tunnels! If my shoulders (and everything else) don't hurt by the end of that then I'll be very surprised!

I wrote a few weeks ago that my professor offered me a 1-year post-doc position. Today she told me I will get an additional year! It feels good not to have to worry about a new job for the next 2.5 years.

Sarah, good luck with your move onto your houseboat! I'm sure you will master the locks and things in no time. Just remember to take your heat pack with you for your shoulders! ;)

I cannot wait to get updates on your journey, Sarah! Slow and steady, hahaha. Do you have to make the trip all at once, or do you have to stop at night? How does that work?

There was a big fire near where I live last night, in the centre of a city, and this morning I woke up to the news that asbestos was released and we better not leave home and there are no trains or other public transport.

@Cherie - Definitely stopping - the journey will take us 2 weeks in total (stopping each night to moor up at the bank which gives me time to cook and eat dinner and have a much needed nights sleep). The nights are getting in here as we approach the longest day, getting dark around 4pm so that limits the amount of hours we can do in a day - I'm not up for night driving!
Wow that's mad Peggy - I didn't realise asbestos released in to the air upon burning but it makes sense. So does that mean a day off work then ;-)

Ahw, all the narrowboat things sounds so romantic! Just you, your partner and a boat, navigating the waters of England...

That is pretty crazy Peggy!

Me... I'm sitting here waiting to see if I have to take Lexx to hospital for appendicitis. Seems too random, not localised at the moment, but he's not a happy camper it seem. Have I mentioned recently I hate Christmas?

And I only did as we were both convinced the appendix was on the left side, and thought we should check. Nope. Right.

Also, we do still have that NHS Direct phone line Sarah. We used it when I fell ill back in July. It's really useful.

The other thing I like to do in a&e is people watch - it's really hard not to be curious about what other people have done and everyone reacts very differently to emergencies. Just to clarify, I don't just randomly rock up to a&e to do this - just on the odd times we've had to go. ;-)

I have no first-hand experience, but I think here if it's not life-threatening and it's evening or weekend, you have to call a general GP number that has GP'S on call for a greater area. They tell you what to do and whether you can come by. I think we're not even allowed to go to A&E unless it's life-threatening, and if you go there for something not life or death, you have to pay for all the costs, while insurance pays all our most of it if you go through that general GP thing first.

I hope Lexx is feeling better. I avoid googling symptons online. It's the only way to not get crazy. Unless I know what the issue is then I google ways to treat it naturally but other than that...I stay away from WebMD type things.

@Rusalka - Both my husband and my oldest daughter had "atypical" appendicitis, really hard to diagnose. To be honest, I knew before the doctors what was going on.
Only thing I would say is control his temperature. If the presents fever, even a mild one, just go to see someone.
Hope this is nothing!

The asbestos here is being cleaned up at the moment. Latest news is that this will last until Saturday (!) and that most shops in the affected area will also stay closed until then. It's much more serious than I thought. First estimates were that cleaning would be finished tomorrow.

Good luck Rusalka! I hope it all gets sorted and that Lexx soon starts to feel better!

Eek, that's not good Peggy! There must have been a lot of asbestos released for them to keep everything closed for that long. Still, better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

Our apartment is now also in the affected area. They keep extending the area.

Wow! Things have escalated somewhat Peggy. Stay safe! Yes I bet those small businesses will be pretty annoyed but like Lisa says best to be safe. I thought buildings with asbestos had to be rebuilt?!
Well I've just finished my last minute xmas shopping and wrapped it up so that's me done. Nothing majorly exciting for my parents but at least they have something to open. They've been great with all the boat stuff - my mum is making a xmas dinner hamper (minus the hamper) so we can have a proper dinner with all the trimmings. I wasn't going to bother.

The last of my xmas presents arrived a couple of days ago so I am all done now too :)

I had an implement fall off my tractor drawbar of at least 1000 pounds and land on my toe. Luckily there was snow under my foot for xushion. I had to stay there pinned until dad used the loader to lift it off me. The worst part was taking off the boot then very little blood so got brave and took off my sock. I didnt know if my toes were still attached or not. They were there and bent and twisted. Took 4 ibuprofen rested an hour and went back to work. Never been so happy for broke. Toes when you fear they were cut off. Had dad properly inserted the draw pin it never wpuld have fallen on me to begin with. The funny thing was dad oanicked and I'm there calm as anything giving him instructions. Get hit hard enough and you skip pain and go straight to numb

So you were the bloke that nurse wrote about in her blog! She basically said, any patient who claims he's high pain tolerant is looking for drugs, as is anyone who marks down their in significant pain yet smile and say they're not doing so bad. I'll see if I can find the blog.
And pray tell, how did your nose take a pounding?

My doctor's clinic will only book 2 weeks in advance. You phone and are told "sorry, he's booked solid for 2 weeks, call back tomorrow". This can go on for days. Lately he's been saving a block of appointments (late in the afternoon) that they are calling same day appointments. In order to get one, you have to phone as soon as the phones open at 8:30. By 8:35 they're all gone. Stupidest system I have ever encountered!
