message 706: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It is sooo nice here in Virginia today! Nice enough to sit out on our apartment's balcony and read my book :-) and of course my dog is out here with me enjoying the outdoors too.

Mariab | 3059 comments Congrats Rusalka! Being a aunty is a great experience! You can spoil them and have no much responsibility for the end result!

Sarah | 18550 comments I can't remember where we were chatting about card games so I'll put it here. I bought The Rivals of Catan at the weekend and we've played it quite a bit this week - it's really good.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Day one of the quilt retreat, and this is what I got accomplished - 2 of 5 rows. The picture is a bit washed out. The colours are more rich than the picture shows.

Sarah | 18550 comments Love your quilt Janice! I started cutting the squares out for one last year, join a few together and that's as far as I got. I think I need a quilt retreat to get mine done. Looking forward to seeing how you progress with it!

message 718: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Thanks everyone. I'm hoping to get the final three rows and borders on today. I slept in and am meeting a friend for breakfast before we head out to the retreat, so already it's looking like I'm behind on the day's plan. LOL! I'm just so excited to start a new project that I'm anxious to get this one done.

message 719: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Sarah, we get together once a month on a Sunday, and call ourselves Seams Like Sunday. It "seams" like those Sundays and these retreats are the only times I work on my project.

message 723: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Janice, lovely quilt! I used to quilt, lo these many years ago, before my children were born. Still have the stashes of fabric to prove it. I keep thinking I will go back to it some day... I seem to rotate hobbies every couple of years so just waiting for it to come back around I guess.

I may be going 'dark' for a while my friends... I let one of my teenage daughter's friends challenge me to NaNoWriMo, which doesn't seem to leave much time for reading, let alone message boards. I know, first world problems.

message 724: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments Good luck with NaNoWriMo Melissa.

(One of my favorite authors (Patrick Rothfuss) was "discovered" through participating in it! How's that for incentive ☺ )

message 725: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Cathie, I have Rothfuss on my TBR. I was not aware of his participation. I somehow doubt I will find any such accolades, but I am trying to take it seriously. The teenager I mentioned is already a self-published author, so who knows? If I am happy with how it turns out you can all put me on your TBR someday. :)

message 729: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished putting all the rows together but didn't have any energy to put the borders on tonight. I'll do that in the morning.

We were trying to figure out when we started our group. Nobody could remember. I have a notebook in which I list all the quilts I've made as to when I started it, when the top was finished, and when it was completed. We figure the first retreat was November 2006. The group had existed for a few years before that.

I used to say that I had a 4 year attention span, because I'd take up an interest and be passionate about it for 4 years and then completely lose interest. I've been quilting for 15-16 years, so I guess I broke that 4 year attention span.

I just read a short story in which a character's group was called Stitch and Bitch. You got any writers in your group, Peggy? ;)

The story was A Very Holly Christmas.

message 733: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie That's awesome, Melissa!! A friend of mine just told me about NaNoWriMo! I just signed up for it so I could read her stories that she is working on. Good luck!!

Joanne L | 10 comments Nothing Much... I just bought mini presents for this charity/organization called Samaritan's Purse. At the organziation, they hand out boxes(size of a shoe box) and people buy mini presents. You need to fill up the items with materials that people need from all over the world because the organization sends the boxes to poor countries like Africa, India, and etc. You need to fill it up as much as you can. This makes the world "happier" because in countries that are poor, people don't get materials that they need or what they want and when we do something like this, people thank us for what we do and it affects the lives of the people in those poor countries. On the boxes, you can either pick a guy or a girl(taking boxes as how many as you want-I picked 2 boxes) from 3-5, 5-9, 9-14. Anyways, I felt good to do this because last year I forgot to keep on buying items from stores and I didn't have time, but since I did, I feel proud of what I did. Anyone else doing this thing-Samaritan's Purse?

I finished the top, including the borders. I have a couple of pictures, but the picture turned yellow and doesn't show the richness of the colours. I'm going to try to take a picture at home and hope for better results.

I recall my mother talking about their church doing shoe boxes at Christmas time. I don't know if it was organized through the same organization, or a similar one.

Tasha That sounds so wonderful, Almeta! My kids and I look forward every year to the 'angel tree" at our local library. The kids really enjoy choosing a few angels and getting gifts for those kids. It's become a fun tradition.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I participate in the santa for seniors. Like an angel tree only the radio station does if in conjunction with the office for the aging to makr sure the elderly are taken care of. Whether in a home or live by hemselves with no family shut ins. It is sad most want body wash or a pair of sweatpants. Pajamas. Real basic things. You can get them about 5-6 small gifts for about $20-$25. Throw in a box of chocolates or something. For $100 you can handle 4-5 of these seniors and there are hundreds that need gifts out there

message 742: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Last week was the annual childrens miracle network drive which we donate to. Another great program as 100% of the money goes to the famikies and also stays local. Done on the radio we raise about 150-$200,000 which is pretty good since we are a pretty rural regio . our "city" probably only make a small village compared to major cities

message 743: by Tasha (new)

Tasha That is nice, Travis, Senoirs are probably the most forgotten group. It is sad about the things they want. My kids are always saddened by what these kids ask too. They have asked for things like pajamas and sweatpants. Real basic things. Everyone once in a while they will aski for something more like a toy but it's often the basic things.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The group I am in at work have always signed up for a program called adopt-a-family. We do it at Thanksgiving and Christmas. For Thanksgiving we all donate money and then buy food for the families we are assigned. For the Christmas one, we get to choose a family member to buy for or give money to allow someone else to buy items. We usually have several families. They all fill out a list of the things they want. The kids always want every toy known, but the parents are hard. It is hard to go pick up underware and wrap them for grown men you do not know.

Sarah | 18550 comments Grr! Our landlord just rang to say he's putting the rent up, immediate effect! Just as well we're moving out. I am still going to dispute it though as our contract says that rent increases can only be applied at the beginning of the calendar year. We're likely to still be in the flat until the end of January. Fingers crossed!

Oh and I'm really excited as I bought a Spaghetti Squash! I know ages ago we talked about spaghetti squash and I'd never heard of them before (nor seen any in shops here). Over the months I've been keeping my out for them. I was wandering past a grocers shop on my way to meet some friends for lunch yesterday and I was a little early so thought I'd ask on the off chance and they had one left! It was meant to be! My partner wasn't as excited as me when I showed him the squash when I got home. I guess I'm easily pleased. Now I need to find some recipes for it!

message 750: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Nov 11, 2014 03:59AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments That's balls. They should have to at least advise you in writing rent is going up at some stage, usually 4 weeks. Dispute!

My spaghetti squash comes with a sticker on it with a website. The one I have in the fridge (about to go off, thanks for the reminder) as come off, sorry. But the first recipe I mad with them was this http://iowagirleats.com/2012/10/18/lo...
Being Australian and not having turkey mince (who does that, piffle!) I used beef mince. It was delicious and so much food!!
