Yes, they had a great time! That was what was a shame - her cast was clearly having a great time - more so than some of the others for sure. The other students at the competition were quoting their play afterward... but isn't that the way? The blockbusters never get the awards.

So go figure, but I got "You must be a native Aussie." There were a couple that are fairly common here I think and one or two I recognized from British slang. And I suppose there were some lucky guesses.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Fosters. *shudder*.
only time I have seen Fosters in someone's fridge (well, since 1985), and Definitely the only time on tap is in the UK. It's also not brewed in Aus anymore, just the UK.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Pretty quiet morning here in the group topics. I was just catching up on all of the toppler chatter and reading through an old group read for spoilers while I finished up my lunch. Back to work now.

message 458: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I noticed that too Cherie. I only had one notification when I woke up this morning! Due to the toppler I suppose ;-)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Just back from a round trip to Houston and back today for an opera dress rehearsal. A dear friend gives us free tickets for our choice of 2 operas each season. Tonight was Otello. Always puts me thru the wringer. What a damn fool Otello is, and yet so believably human. Unlike that demon Iago. Guys like him are the reason that snakes have been given a bad name.

Sarah | 18549 comments We have a program in the UK called University Challenge which is a quiz show for teams from all the different universities to enter and battle it out to be the winner. It's pretty elite and hasn't changed question themes since it started I'm sure - (the theme tune says it all really) and most of the questions are about Classics, Literature, Poetry, Dead Politicians, Classical Music, and Opera! There are the odd Science questions thrown in which are my preference but I'm hopeless on the rest. I audibly grown when it's a round on Opera or Classical Music and generally my partner and I just reply "Madame Butterfly" to every opera question in hope it will one day come up, and "Mozart" for Classical Music. On occasions they'll have a pop music round and we'll be all excited then! Small things...

message 464: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think I read a book about that show! Starter for Ten. I didn't like it so much (the book, I've never seen the show).

message 465: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes that's the show Peggy! I really liked The Young Ones episode which was them going on University Challenge.

You know we were talking about the guy being locked in Waterstones?! Well, the store have decided to offer "sleepovers" although I'm assuming it's just a one off!

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I frequently ask my husband when he's going to go on Jeopardy and win us a million dollars. Because he gets so much right all the time. Makes it hard to watch Jeopardy with him except I'm so in awe.

He really knows his opera, classical music, physics, math, geography, politics, history, sports, classic movies, classic literature, and more. But current pop music, t.v., and word puzzles leave him scratching his head. He's light years ahead of me, I know.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Ha ha, I never saw that scene in the movie, but I never watched the whole thing either.

I am home sick today. Reading and sleeping between bouts of sickness most of the day. No fever, so hopefully it will be over and I can go to work tomorrow to catch up a little and bring my laptop home with me. I have Friday off for a vacation day but I am my own coverage. :(

It is absolutely pouring down rain in buckets here today. The water sheeting off of the roof of my house and going into the down spouts sounds like Niagara Falls!

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments We must have the same storm system going through, I was driving to work this morning in that weather!! I felt like I was driving through a river instead of on a road.

I feel your pain on being your own coverage, kinda sucks to think about all the work you should be doing when you're home sick, feel better soon. :)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Get better Cherie!

It's hot. Really hot. Rather beautiful though, and means winter is done (I need to hurry up my tomato seedlings!). But the plants have all opened up to the hotness and spreading their bits all over the place. Like up my nose.

I am a snotty mess. Not a happy camper. Hate hay fever.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I've discovered how to get rid of large furniture objects in my apartment with minimal effort on my part. Just put it out in the lobby with a note - "Free for the taking".

I saw a large tv out there this morning. A couple of hours later, the maintenance crew pulled up in a half ton and hauled it away. There was another tv in the back of the truck so someone in another building must have tried the same trick.

I checked out the new apartment building going up. Units start at $1650/month, plus $25/month for my cat. I don't know if I can afford it. But, I'm going for a tour when the show suite opens up which may be next week.

And happy birthday Sarah!!

message 486: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks Peggy! Yep Birthday today! Not feeling very birthday-y though at the moment but it is still early! The first "Happy Birthday" I had was from google when I opened my internet browser - I hate technology! But on a plus note, a friend of mine gave me a very generous 50 squid to spend on books for my kindle because I've had to sell all my physical books in prep for moving on the boat (which I was rather sad about). So I will enjoying browsing later. Oh and looking forward to my very lovely Thai Massage this afternoon!

I might have to try that trick of dumping everything on the street when we move! I know people leave books and the odd bit of furniture out around here with notes so it's not uncommon!

Fingers crossed for you Janice on the flat. I thought it funny that you had to pay a monthly fee for your cat - just sounds weird! Here in the UK we might have to pay a bigger deposit in case carpets or curtains or something needed cleaning/replacing upon vacating at the end of the contract, but not monthly fee as far as I'm aware.

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh and a new Banksy has shown up in Bristol and it's of the girl on the front cover of Girl With a Pearl Earring Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

I wonder whether Banksy has read the book?!? I know it's a painting by Vermeer originally so might be totally unrelated to the book but thought I'd post.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments happy birthday Sarah! Heat a cool Banksy. I fell like he nay be someone who has either read it or seen the painting or both.

Janice your furniture solution sounds like a plan. We tend to leave things in our town on the Edgr of the road with a sign saying free. We had a really dodgy postman hear a while ago (long story) and I saw him o e day drive past a pile on some es driveway, reverse, open the back of the van and start piling things in. Then the neighbour ran out screaming and waving at the postie. Neighbour was CLEANING his garage and was about to put everything back. The postie was pInching it all and screaming at the guy!! I drove back a few minutes later and everything was back on the driveway. Oops

There is a $250 non-refundable deposit for the cat as well as the monthly rent. I had to pay a deposit where I'm at right now but there's no monthly fee.

I doubt I will take that apartment. I don't think I can afford an additional $350/month. I'm still waiting for my ex to pay out the settlement and get my name off the mortgage on the farm. Once that happens, I would like to buy a house or condo. I think I just need to be a little more patient. I just want to get out of this ghetto! I'm tired of the noise and the drunks in the area.

Sure... more likely drunk texting. Hehehehe!

That would have been funny to see the postie pilfering that homeowner's stuff.

Yes, you do see people leaving things out with a sign that it's for free here too, but I was rather surprised to see the rental agency removing it from the premises.

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Happy birthday Sarah! Hope you're having a lovely day.

That's great street art - I love how the alarm box is her earring! I've read the book - the author imagines a life for the girl in the painting, and the novel is about this fictional life, and about her being painted by Vermeer.
