I'm going to finish it, but I really prefer paranormal or psychological horror. This has been just gore and nastiness for the sake of gore and nastiness, it seems, and though I don't consider myself to be squeamish, this book has definitely made my stomach turn more than once.
Despite the content, I've been really enjoying the style though. I like the little bits of foreshadowing in the form of the newspaper articles and such. It's interesting to read that and then find the connections in the coming chapters.
One thing I have to say though, (view spoiler)

I didn't like Shelley as well, but more than that I found him to be (view spoiler)

I agree with Michael's assessment on this one.

I understand why the spoilers are supposed to be removed, but I agree that they are kind of annoying. I've always thought it might be nice to at least have a date each month past which we don't have to use spoilers.

That's a great idea. In some "buddy reads" we set a date where anything read up to "25%", for example, doesn't have to be hidden in spoiler tags. Then 50%, etc...

Today I ate spicy sushi to the delightful and soothing sound of Pfft! Pfft! Pfft! Newton, you brave, brave boy. They underrate you.

Also with Greg and C.J. re the ending, though really curious what others think. (view spoiler)

I would have to agree with you along those lines, too, Leah. (view spoiler) .

I'm really enjoying the book. It's fast and pretty slick, but I feel like there's not enough "now" in it.

All in all, I felt this book started out pretty strong, but crossed quickly into generic territory.
One other thing that bothered me was (view spoiler)

I have a Goodreads friend that has a galley copy of this book that he would like to pass on. If you are interested in it, post here, and I will check back later. :)

Personally, I really enjoyed this one, and glad it was picked. :)

His new one coming out in January looks pretty solid. I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

Actually, in the blurb, I read a review quote that described this book as "Lord of the Flies meets Night of t..."
I'm enjoying this book much more than I ever liked Lord of the Flies! Lol

As someone else pointed out, The Ruins is a much better creeping sort of horror and even a more recent book like Parasite does a much better job with a similar premise.
I was actually disappointed in Stephen King for agreeing to put a blurb on this book.

The plot and the setting were ok, they are used out but it doesn't matter to me. It's more important to me what the author does with it. There were some original scenes and a lot of disgusting scenes. Usually I don't get easily disturbed, I guess I hate the worms and all the creepy crawlies. I wish the story didn't drag that long, I think it would have been more interesting in case if it was shorter...though with his need to go into details that much, i don't how that could have been accomplished other way that what hedid.
All in all, I enjoyed the book, but I'm happy to have finished it.

I was thinking along those lines in the beginning too! Group of friends isolated in the woods and strange, parasitic events ensue.

For any of you who read and loved (or at least enjoyed a lot) this book, I just noticed that it's missing from this year's Goodreads Choice nominations for Horror.
Since this was by far my favorite Horror read for 2014 I've been nudging all my horror pals to write in their vote for this book (which you can do at the bottom of the page past all the other nominated books).
Cheers everyone.

Also, I found one troop member's job posting from last summer. http://imgur.com/vVAjymh
