May I make some suggestions...
I've noticed that teams win when people on them read way more than their average. I've been on high and low ranking teams. Could there be a way that you can only read double your stated pages or something?
Also, there doesn't seem to be a way for a low ranking team to ever catch up...yes, I'm very competitive, but if this is truly a challenge rather than a team bonding event...to that end, we could just not post any rankings until the end of the challenge and then teams would just do as they do. Or you could post only the weekly totals or maybe weekly team ranking is by # of books read/# of books pledged per week.
Thanks for running these challenges. I've had great fun and met some really nice GR friends playing.

I noticed that in the wheel-a-thon one as well. I think that a lot of people have skewed reading schedules due to seasonal differences in their job requirements (like teachers being off in the summer). It does seem like the teams that did the best had everyone read at slightly above average rather than one person who stuck way out so I'm not sure if capping individual readers would help. I think it's just the difference between seasonal readers and consistent readers.
There are additional ways to earn points during this challenge for book of the month and buddy reads that should help strategic readers.

I agree that I don't think capping individual people would help or, really, be fair. I know for me, just discovering reading challenges this summer has more than doubled my reading speed because now I'm having more fun. If that had happened during this challenge and all of a sudden I didn't even count or matter for my team anymore, that would be really disappointing. I think one of the main points of challenges, while it is a bonding and competitive event, is to encourage having fun while reading. Limiting the amount of reading seems sort of backwards to me.

I think it worked pretty well in the last tower team challenge, because if someone looked like they were going to read way over or way under their goal then their goal was re-evaluated. That made it possible to add members to a team that was falling behind.
I'm assuming we'll be doing that again this round.
Thanks Marla.
Yes thats right Amanda. We will alter member's goals in our team spreadsheets if they go well over/under to keep teams around even.
Also, Tower Teams is a long team challenge so, unlike the wheelathon, you'll find people are unlikely to keep reading well over their average for too long (unless they are seasonal readers and it happens to be that time of year)
Although TT does have a compteitive element, we describe it as a "challenge" rather than a "competition" because it really is about challenging yourself and your team mates to read more and, potentially more varied books. We have also changed the points structure this time so it isn't just about the number of books read. Hopefully that can assist those teams who are slower to start to 'catch up'

If a lot of members on a team are reading way above their average, they will be less likely to get new players even when someone leaves the team.
eta: as one of those readers that wants to read every book at once and has a habit of having too many going at once: these team challenges really help me to focus more on finishing them up instead of having an ever growing currently reading list.
We appreciate the input Marla - it really helps us to try and think of new ways to structure these challenges!
I'm the same Mary, I get motivated to finish a book rather than starting a new one ; and I tend to read everyday rather than just on weekends :)
