Tracy | 2 comments I don't have as many details as I'd like because I've been trying to find this book for some patrons to no avail and I'm working from their description.

The patrons told me that this was a science fiction book, possibly for young adults. They seemed to think that the author was female and they'd read the book last year. To my knowledge, the plot involves a group of clones working in a factory under harsh conditions. The main character was a woman clone (although the clones were somewhat androgynous). She escapes from this factory to a planet with many interesting creatures/aliens of different species. The name of the AI/Artificial Intelligence was Owl.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've hit a real dead end here.

Ayshe's suggestion of A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers seems to match your description.

One reviewer says, "Sidra, as she calls herself, has gone from being a ship's AI to being in a body, and is having serious trouble adapting. In addition to being a good sci fi story, Chambers explores identity, why we are who we are, and what it means to be, well, not human, but a person.
A good bit of the book is flashback to Pepper's days as a child slave on her homeworld, her escape, and her finding and being taken in by a different AI, the kindly Owl. Jane has a lot of adventures as she grows and, with Owl's help, plots to escape her hellish world."

Here's the Google Books preview - https://books.google.com/books?id=EjW... There are different cover images.
