I initially agreed to review the audio-book version of this but, given the genre, I felt that I'd get more from the printed version so I requested that as well.
Alan Smith narrates this with a neo-noir attitude that sounds like he's part Joe Friday and part Sam Spade. Personally I preferred the text version but I'm certain that that will vary from individual to individual. For me it was just a personal preference. Alan Smith perfectly embodies the tone one would expect from the damaged, world weary killer known as D. But the voice I heard in my head when reading the text version was a kinder, more empathetic one.
