Rise to Power

This adaptation of a familiar story from the Old Testament is unique and feels very modern. From the very first line of the prologue, the story drew me in, partly because of the masterful use of the first person by the author, and partly because of her engaging writing style. The scene of King David as a prisoner trying to escape and tell his story to liberate his soul is compelling and highly readable.
And then the story gets even better. Like all Uvi Poznansky's books, this one has crisp and engaging dialogue, well-drawn characters and a unique plot. It was interesting for me to see the events from King David's perspective and trace his journey from childhood to maturity and right into today's time, making the story relevant and engaging for today's readers. In this story, King David is not a mythical hero - he comes across as a real person, imperfect, flawed, and experiencing conflicting emotions - and that makes him so much more relatable, and his story - so much more compelling. A great read! Five stars.

A Peek at Batsheba

An enjoyable and thought-provoking book! Uvi Poznansky makes the story of King David accessible and interesting. King David is very much a human being before he is King and, like all people, he has human struggles and emotions, eternal and ever-lasting.
While Uvi Poznansky's book clearly stems from her extensive knowledge of the biblical story, research, and art history (she's an artist herself, too!), this book is a work of fiction, written in a contemporary voice that makes it much easier for today's readers to relate to the story and to King David.

Descriptions in "A Peek at Bathsheba" are beautiful, vivid, majestic and poetic. The book is a work of art but it is also an engaging story - what a treat! I love Uvi Poznansky's subtle humor and insightful commentaries. I'm curious to see how the change in Bathsheba that is beginning in this book will play out in the next book in the David Chronicles series. Five stars!

Torn in a heart-breaking dilemma between loyalty and justice, King David makes the choice dictated by his heart, and that results in a series of grave consequences for the king himself, his family, and country. His future life, legacy, and the potential successor are now all unclear. What a unique collection by Uvi Poznansky. The tales are laden with mystery and macabre.

The first story: A dead woman lost her name and was looking for her name. She always said, “I am what I am”. It was inspired by the Biblical story of Job. It really spoke to me how Job’s wife must have felt, when Job lost everything.

The next stories: I woman. The Hollow and The One who Never Leaves. The stories are about, as the first one, of a dead woman, a cat and about Satan sticking his horns where they don’t belong.

Each story spoke individually to me but took me into an amazing and unexpected direction and spin around a hyper reality and course. It was amazing how Uvi’s mind is working, but left me thinking twice again.

I have to say, I have never read a story so mysterious and macabre and unique. But again, I enjoyed each story, because each story had something to tell and gave a message and left me thinking.

I won’t go deeper into each story, you better read the book.

Below, somewhere in the women’s quarters, children are starting to awaken. I hear their voices: some cry, others call for their mothers. One of them, a young girl, runs out to the courtyard, then stops and turns her head back.
I squint against the light, which allows me to recognize her: she is my grandchild, Absalom’s child.
Now she waves at me. Her laughter is so pure, so melodic. It is full of silvery notes, which reminds me of my own daughter, Tamar, and the way she used to laugh, before silence overtook her.
I want to go down to the child and put my arms around her to keep her safe, now and in the future—but I know that it is not in my power. Even so I murmur to her, across the distance, “Let you never surrender to silence, because if you do, it would leave you with the rusty, poisonous taste of shame.”
The child has opened the gate. Like me, she is watching the sunrise. I wonder what it means for her. Perhaps, hope.
One day my daughter, Tamar, will stop listening to the dictates of those who wished to hush her. She will no longer obey the words, ‘Shut up,’ which she must still be hearing in her mind, in the voice of Amnon, who raped her. Nor will she obey the words, “Be silent for now,” in the voice of Absalom, who sought to protect her.
The real shame—now I know—is to consent to silence. A day will come when she will transform her suffering into meaning, into words.

I read "Rise to Power" as part of the At Odds with Destiny Boxed set. You can see my verified review there as well.

First, I have to commend the author for taking on such a feat as to write a story such at this. A story well known to many, but from a different POV. The idea that history may not be what we believe--after all, there are countless sides to any story. While historical titles generally bore me, alternate history has the opposite effect; I find myself fascinated.

In Rise to Power, King David (you remember the story of David and Goliath, I'm sure, even if you are an Athiest as I am) knowing his life will soon end, recounts the "true" history of his life. Something he had, before then, tried to keep hidden. You really get his whole life here, as though it were an autobiography, though of course, it's really fiction based on fact. The way Poznansky takes popular bible stories and retells them in a way that is relatable to modern times is both entertaining and fascinating.

The writing is beautiful. I would love to see what Poznansky could accomplish with non-religious material, should she ever take that route. Her ability to capture character and emotion is nothing short of literary excellence, and the modern flair really only adds to that, allowing for a more engaging voice and style.

Well done. I look forward to reading more from this collection as well.

In Book three of the David Chronicles, Uvi Poznansky continues to deliver first class character development with her first-person story telling. “The Edge of Revolt” follows King David into his old age. Uvi puts us there. We discover the cracks in the king's character, apparent to those in his court, yet denied by his regal vanity until at last the King sees the truth in the shattered lives of his progeny—his murderous and dishonorable sons, and Tamar, his ravished and dishonored daughter—all victims in David's eyes of his shortcomings.

As in the first two books in the trilogy, Uvi performs masterful story telling by mining between the lines of the biblical renditions. There she finds nuggets of what-if revelation about who this David of yore really was. Again, she puts us there, this time by sprinkling the narrative and dialogue with characterizations and idioms right out of the Twenty-First Century:

“Dad,” she has Solomon ask David, “are you cold?”

And from her narraative—“. . . I am a king, and a king I shall remain till my last breath.

“Out with the old, in with the new?”

Not to be outdone by the biblical poet, Uvi has her own ways of evoking emotion and eloquence:

“Back in the palace, where we used to walk on the softest of rugs, our soles have softened. Spoiled by luxury, so have our souls. To survive this winter in the wilderness, body and spirit must harden.

Can we do it? God knows.”

Or

“... everyone knows that when Joav comes too close, as if to hug you or whisper a dirty joke in your ear, the next thing you know is a stab under the fifth rib.”

Or

“To remind him of the words uttered by Abner, the general he stabbed to death years ago, I ask, 'should the sword devour forever?'”

How like David; how like Uvi in portraying him.

Enough. If you haven't read the first two books in the trilogy, put them by your nightstand. When you are finished with them, you won't be satisfied until you've turned the last page of “The Edge of Revolt.”

Rise to Power by Uvi Poznansky is a stand-alone historical novel, even though it is Volume 1 of the David Chronicles box set. Rise to Power chronicles the story of King David with a little bit of Goliath and a whole lot of Saul.
I'm picky about the historical fiction I choose to read. When it's done well, I'm a fan. I'm also a fan of Uvi Poznansky and her contemporary work of literary fiction, Apart from Love, so I began reading with confidence that Ms. Poznansky's deft hand could change genres with aplomb.
Historical fiction recounting a familiar story requires a creative mind to make the story fresh, even though we already know the ending. It's why the Greeks saw hundreds of versions of Oedipus and Elizabethans never tired of watching Caesar mutter, "Et tu, Brute?" Readers and play- and movie-goers desire to be entertained with a perspective they've not yet imagined.
The task demands a command of plot structure, development of characters, and a unique unfolding of events. Ms. Poznansky achieves it all in Rise to Power.
Even more challenging for the author is point of view. In this novel, the reader jumps right into the mind of David, who takes us on his journey from his job as Saul's court jester and musician to his encounter with the Philistine Goliath and beyond. The first person point of view sets it apart from other retellings because now we’ve entered into the realm of the author’s imagination as she envisions how David might have felt at all the junctures in his life.
The story of Kind David recounts the magical myth of a man--perhaps the original story of poor boy triumphant in his rise to glory. Going inside the mind of the man himself provides us with more than a mere recounting of the details we already know. His rise to glory--seen through his eyes--follows the universal contrasts of fear and bravery, disgust and lust, joy and depression, love and hate, disapprobation and respect.
The author captivates the reader with the first line of Chapter 1: "I am so thrilled." This chapter is preceded by a Prologue set later in David's life where he expresses anything but the joy of this first glimpse into his mind as a young boy summoned to play before King Saul.
Let the roller coaster ride to power begin. I am now anxious to read Volumes 2 and 3, A Peek at Bathsheba and The Edge of Revolt. I'm impressed with all aspects of this work of historical fiction, so I am certain the rest of The David Chronicles will follow suit.

Coming out of so long a trance, oft-repeated formulae took over. He told himself that when he woke he would be totally refreshed, and remember everything valuable that had transpired. He told himself that he would be stronger, quicker in body and mind, than he had been before he ventured to his rest-place. He told himself that only good would come of what he’d learned there.
Then he counted to three, opened his eyes, and sat up abruptly.
There before him, nothing had changed except shadows. These had grown shorter, then long again, as he and the adept had labored. Outside his cabin’s window, the sun was setting. The air smelled of dusk and night-blooming flowers, and carried the sounds of nocturnal insects.
For an instant he thought he was alone, that the adept had disappeared. But then he heard the old man’s voice, wispy and somehow weaker than it had been in his rest-place.
And saw the old one clearly, where he had not seen the man before. Still in a cross-legged position, the adept said: “Niko, my legs have fallen asleep. Can you help me?”
It was a touch the teacher was asking for – not ‘death touch,’ but ‘life touch.’ Niko had not used such a touch since his early training. But he did now. He swung his own legs off his pallet and knelt before the old man. He held his own palm out, toward the other’s body, and slowly extended it until he felt heat, and a current, a tide as if he had touched the sea.

Seeing how exhausted I am Abishag takes the feather, ever so gently, from my fingers, careful not to touch the tip, and withdraws from me. Washing the ink off at the other end of the chamber, she bends over the windowsill, glancing at the lush trees swaying down there, in the royal gardens. Without words, she hums a little tune under her breath, and her voice is so sad, so melodious, that it tells me how desperately she misses her faraway village, from where she was taken to the palace.
She must have been eager, at first, to meet the notoriously dashing young hero, the slayer of Goliath, the idol drawn so perfectly out of legends that belong to a dying generation. Only now does she realize that I belong nowhere else but in her aging mother’s dreams.
I tell her, “Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention. Forget your people and your father’s house. Let the king be enthralled by your beauty. Honor him, for he is your lord.”
And at once I wonder, why do I take this fatherly tone with her, all of a sudden? And why do I speak of myself as if I were not here?
Abishag cannot help but yawn, which I happen to understand, because the lecture I have aimed at her bores me, too.
“So many young men, out there,” she whispers.
“So much noise,” I complain, over her excitement.
“If it’s disturbing to you, your majesty, I can go down,” she offers. “I can ask them to keep things more quiet, for you.”
“No,” say I. “Stay with me.”
“Are you cold? Shall I close the curtains?”
“No. Keep them open.”
Then, with slight hesitation, “Your son,” she says. “What does he want? Why did he come?”
“He loves me so,” I say, hoping she would not catch the irony in my voice. “Once in a long while he comes up here, to check if I’m still breathing.”
Abishag says nothing in reply. After a long pause she asks, “Did he invite you to the festivities? I would love to escort you—”
“Festivities?” say I. “No one tells me anything these days, which is why I am becoming so pitifully suspicious.”
“I see him down there,” she says. “His guests are arriving now, gathering around to greet him. They’re laughing. He’s not.”
At that I wave my hand. “Adoniah must be tired. He’s utterly weary of life here, in my palace. Luxury can be such a boring thing when you’re born into it.”
She glances back at me, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Is it, really?”
“It must be,” say I. “Unlike me, he’s never fought for what he has."

Now I rush out of the court to stop what I know is about to happen. A horde of servants forms around me, which unfortunately slows me down. They are crossing each other in great confusion, running every which way, unsure what I want, what is expected of them, and why there is such a wild, frightened look in my eyes.
“Beware,” cries one of them, pointing at the horizon. “Look: the sky is darkening.”
“A storm is coming,” cries another.
And a third one begs me, “Come back into the palace, your majesty! This is a dangerous time to be outdoors.”
I pay no attention to them, and without waiting for my stable boy to bridle my stallion I mount it.
I tap my heels into its sides, urging the animal first into trotting, then into galloping at a blistering pace down the hill to my son’s house. I can no longer deny knowing the desire that ails him, nor can I pretend to doubt the rumors. Lately, they have become wild, and far too persistent. Amnon has forced himself on young girls before. I’ve heard of it. I know it.
Now can I get there in time, before he lays a hand on my only daughter?
Blood throbbing. Veins swelling. Heart coming close to a burst. Rage. Then, a sudden gust of wind slaps my face. Blustering in from the east, a hot, howling gale whips desert sand into the air, blinding me.
I blink away the dust, the tears, and charge ahead, riding my stallion at full speed, nearly slipping over the acorns strewn all over, under the oak trees. Hooves drumming, drumming upon the dirt road, never fast enough.
As I turn the bend I spot a dark figure racing ahead opposite me through the woods. For a minute I think I see myself—a reflection of me in him. There is that young man, flying through the gap between one tree trunk and another, coming at me through the next gap, and the one after that. He crosses my path and blocks me. So I rein in my stallion, and when the dust settles I recognize him.
There, against a background of tortuous, thorny branches, sitting astride his mule, is my second son, Absalom--
