Nayeli Recoba Thomas gives us a perspective on the reality that Garden Heights faces, such as innocent lives being taken away from the police. I can't picture myself being in the same position that Starr was in from seeing her best friend get killed in front of her eyes to her seeing on the news the justice Khalil isn't receiving. She tries her best to keep herself up and continue with her daily life no matter all the pressure and bad situations she keeps witnessing. It gets me so upset that justice isn't being served and people see Khalil as a drug dealer. Starr gets so stressed out especially when she feels betrayal during the time her friends asked if she knew Khalil but it's because Starr doesn't want her privileged friends thinking of her otherwise in ways as her being in or apart of the ghetto. She does everything she can to support the riots and movements going on for Khalil. Starr is such an empowering and strong young lady.
