In Chapter 2, Ashima is excitedly shopping for her trip to India, all while getting used to raising a young Gogol, and in her rush, she leaves her bags behind on the subway. When Ashoke calls the lost and found, everything is returned to them, with not a single item missing or out of place.

Do you think this is realistic? Have you ever been in a similar situation? If so, what was the outcome?

I had to keep reminding myself while reading, that this book takes place an entire generation ago, with the story starting in the late 60s/early 70s - do you think perhaps this display of honesty and good-fortune is due to the time period? What does that say about us as a society now and the expectations we have come to have about humankind?
