I love how chaotic the American magicians are. I mean, Carhenge? Iconic. I really enjoyed seeing how the British and American views of the world conflicted.

Picked this one back up tonight and read the next few chapters. Just finished 38

(view spoiler)[ DRAGONS!!!! Also, Agatha is with VAMPIRES! Whoa! I mean, they seemed fishy but its confirmed! I'm glad they're letting Shepard help them, I like him so far - and he totes is crushing on Penny!

I'm just not as hooked or in love with this book as I was the first. I think it's the Baz/Simon dynamic.. it's too off here.. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Ok, so I was confident this was going to be a three star read for me but man, that last quarter was a helluva ride. And of course that cliffhanger with a long a** wait for book 3.

I think it was Simon/Baz's dynamic that really kept me from loving this installment as much as the first. It was so lacking and I just couldn't get as invested. I did adore Shepard though and look forward to him returning to London with the group! (hide spoiler)]

I think it's cute that Baz and Simon are afraid to say how much they like each other, or that they want to sleep in the same bed. And Penny is oblivious that she didn't see her boyfriend was breaking up with her, but he also should have been more direct. (hide spoiler)]

ch 48 (view spoiler)[ I feel for Baz, he met other vampires and learned a lot about his species. Like, he can just drink from a human and not kill them. And now he's kind of confused, that's a big revelation.

This was a bit slow and I wanted more romance between Simon and Baz. But the narration was pretty good on the audiobook (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ I was really nervous starting this book because I have mostly heard negatives about it. But up until now, I am enjoying it well enough. I like seeing the character again and the fact that they actually suffer from the consequences of the war they fought. However, I find the book a bit dreary and I miss the strong banter between Baz and Simon that was so enjoyable in the first book. I had hoped more of their romance but the only thing Simon thinks about is breaking up with Baz because he 'deserves better'. Also, how couldn't Penny know that America was this big??? One world map shows you that the USA is about as big as the entirety of Europe. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Same here, I wonder how her storyline will match with the one of Simon and the crew, but hostage situation sounds quite plausible yeah. I wonder if they know she has magic.

It seems somewhat in personality with Penny that she doesn't realise it, though Micah could just have, like, texted her or emailed her that he wanted to break up. It's cruel but less cruel than just not telling her at all. I find it kinda funny though that they refuse to share a bed while they basically did that during school. Like, it can't get more intimate than sharing a room and with beds almost next to each other. (hide spoiler)]

(I'm sorry for being so late, I've been so busy that I hadn't had the time to sit down.)
(view spoiler)[ I didn't hate the book nor did I love it. I wish we got to see more of Shepard and Agatha. I liked Penny's POV, though I am surprised that she hadn't thought about Micah at all. Like, they have been together for years and she just completely forgets about him. I hardly felt like the plot really mattered? Like, on paper, they went to America and retrieved Agatha and now have to go back to London. But instead of the next day, they have to leave today. Also, I hated the romantic relationship. I loved the first book for the relationship between Baz and Simon. It doesn't even have to be romantic, but I liked their dynamic. Now Simon is just thinking about breaking up with Baz, figuring he is better off with Lamb (who betrayed them, mind you). Baz tries to convey his feelings for Simon but he just wasn't having it and ugh. Writing-wise, I liked this, but the story and characters fell flat for me. Aside from Shepard. I loved Shepard. Same, I really liked Shepard's narration. His character feels like a fresh breath of air. (It would be a plot twist though that Shepard would be evil or lead them into a trap or anything like that)

(view spoiler)[I'm quite sure that the third book is officially announced so yeah, there will be a third book! I can't wait to return to Watford and get more of Shepard. He was one of the highlights of this book for me.

I agree the audiobook narration was great! The plot, on the other hand... I'm not sure what the whole goal was of the plot. Barely anything has changed. (well, characters changed, but I am not sure if it's for the best). I missed the Snowbaz romance in this book and I wished there was more cutesy romance. Like, it would make the book so much more fun. (hide spoiler)]

Baz literally learned something about vampires and how to control his fangs, Penny to not be so over- self-confident and about magic, Agatha that she can't escape being magical and Simon has come to some sort of acceptance that he no longer can cast spells. That was really great, but I sort if missed the group of learning about Lucy and Simon's heritage. Hope the third book will cover that. (hide spoiler)]
