I didn't see Joe McCarthy listed above. I've read/heard of a few novels based on his blacklisting and there are a number of authors he blacklisted.

Thanks! I missed it.
I love this! Haha, is it bad that I’ve just spent a good 10 minutes singing the song to myself and simultaneously scrolling between the different categories to find each event or person as I sang their name? 😂
Man oh man, you will make a group of people very happy. My other book club has decided to use this as the basis for the whole year. Hence why I suggested it. But we are still hammering out how to make it work into twelve months. You did it I think. Yay. Less work for me. If I combine musicals with movies and Middle east and Egypt and put Religious people, royalty and other people together I have twelve categories. Done!
Thank you so much, dalex!Y'all, just think of how many fascinating books we could read working our way through this list! This would be such good motivation to finally read And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, but then again I'd like to be more knowledgeable about McCarthyism (I just watched Good Night and Good Luck and it piqued my curiosity). I don't even know what the Starkweather homicide is!
I do find the brainstorming of categories exciting. :-)
There's a Sporcle quiz if anyone wants to test their knowledge: https://www.sporcle.com/games/g/wedid...
omg, I can't wait to read for this prompt! I think someone else also said they might do this song as it's own challenge? yes, yes, I think I will too. just not sure where to fit it in next year though. (giggle) thank you Alex for the awesome breakdown!
I've been doing a not-timed challenge of reading a book about every country. I'm thrilled that I'll be able to use Hungary, Lebanon, or Palestine for this prompt. Thanks for the breakdown! It made choosing so much easier, especially with looking up some of those names.
I'm not sure if I'll do ATY next year but if nothing else I would DEFINITELY do this challenge prompt! So creative!
According to Wikipedia, the first time was for when he was elected to the senate in 1950, and the “back again” was when he was elected president in 1968. Also, for Stacey: “Santayana goodbye” refers to George Santayana, philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist, who died on September 26, 1952.

Thanks so much for that good info, Chrissy! I really love this challenge. I'm almost looking more forward to the researching of books in each category than to reading one.
What a neat idea, Monkiecat. By learning about those things that way, he is unlikely to ever forget them.
Reese Witherspoon’s pick for this month looks like it would be perfect for this prompt! I’m on a phone, so I can’t tag the book, but it’s THE SECRETS WE KEPT by Lara Prescott. Touches on Russia and communism and Dr. Zhivago.

It does sound interesting, Emily!
