We were wondering if any of our fabulous members would be interested in writing/hosting the Monthly Music Challenge! It can be a singer, group, album or maybe you have a fantastic music idea of your own.

Post a message and we will PM you!!

Helen | 1255 comments A Challenge Idea

The Intense Interest Challenge
6 months

Choice 1: You decide topic
2: Random topic
Choose random number here: https://www.google.com/search?q=rando...
and apply the number (1-100) to tell you the book number, from which you pick a topic, either from Best Nonfiction of 20th Century
http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/...

OR from Best Novels http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/...

Challenge: Read 5 books for each area below about the topic:
at least 2 over 100 pages and 2 over 200 pages
any genre, re-reads OK

Levels: 1-2 topics: Learning (5-10 books)
3-4 topics: Penetrating (15-20 books)
5-6 topics: Deep (25 books + 5 other media, if chosen!)

1) History: era, event chronology

2) Location: geography, environment, climate

3) Individuals involved: major actors, people affected

4) Related topics: music, art, dance, speeches, poetry

5) Surrounding culture: politics, workplace, social classes, issues of freedom and individuality and self-actualization

6) Multimedia: see mainstream movies or DVD's, hear podcasts about it (document website), attend an art gallery or concert or cultural fair (document), etc.

Example: Choice 1
I pick the topic of Midwifery

I choose the Learning level, 1 topic

I choose Individuals Involved,
so I read 5 books, 1 shorter, 2 over 100 pages, 2 over 200 pages
all non-fiction about midwives & their own families & their clients

OR:

Choice 2
I choose random & get the random number 88.
I can choose book 88 of Modern Library: 6 Easy Pieces by Feynman OR book 88 of Best Novels, The Call of the Wild by Jack London

I prefer animals to physics, so I decide to read:

Penetrating, 3-4 topics about dogs: (5 books each)
1) Locations: of various dogs
2) Individuals involved: owners, employers
3) Related topic: Poetry about dogs
4) Multimedia: 5 movies with MC dogs

Helen | 1255 comments Another Challenge Idea

The Author Challenge
Monthly

Choose characteristics of authors and read books by that type of author

Levels: Introduction: 1-3 books
Have Coffee Together: 4-6 books
Become Friends: 7-9 books

Gender (m, f, other)
Birthplace (Asia, Scotland, NYC)
Age (child, teen, adult, senior)
Ethnicity (Hispanic, African, Italian-American)
Political viewpoint (conservative, radical, anti-war)
Certain profession (MD, mathematician, blue-collar worker, work with kids)
Religion (atheist, Islam, Irish-Catholic)

Example: one month I start with an Introduction, 1-3 books,
by an Italian-American gay woman, such as Mari SanGiovanni:
80% Done With Straight Girls and
Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer and
Camptown Ladies

The next month I want to read one classic book by a radical white man, so I read Jack London's The Iron Heel .

OK that would be fantastic!! Thanks! I was planning on doing it but it would be awhile. I'm trying to work on the regular challenges. I had cut back on writing challenges when Jenny was a mod but now I have to get back to it.

message 20: by Debs (new)

Debs (3xmum) Is there a challenge where you read a book from every year of your life? So for me born in 1968 that would be my starting point up to the current year, so if it takes you forever you'll constantly be adding a book lol. Just wondered as it's one I would like to do but I can do it myself obviously.

message 21: by Debs (new)

Debs (3xmum) As it's Jubilee year in the UK.. (would you really want to work until you've nearly 100??) can anyone dream up a jubilee challenge? or a Royal challenge of some kind. I'm not very creative sorry!

I'll check out some things and if so, it may appear later in the year as our schedules are set months in advance. :)

Debs (3xmum) I've written a challenge. What do I do with it?
I've done the skeleton, called "A fish out of water" but not really sure what to do with the details like how many books to read etc. I'm thinking now I shouldn't have started this. I'm not very good at these things

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 506 comments Would there be any interest in an A-to-Z challenge for video game characters? I was thinking about creating one for myself (like I did for horse breeds lol) the other day and figured I could host it here for other people to join if they'd be interested.

Lilli Gilliam | 35 comments Hey! I came up with prompts for a Criminal Minds challenge to go in the TV/Movie Challenges section.

Background
The hit crime show follows a team of FBI profilers from the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) based in Quantico, Virginia. The BAU profilers criminals, anticipate their next moves, and stops them before they can strike again.
🔍 Read a book set in Virginia
🔍 Read a book including a character with a special skill
🔍 Read a book with the letters BAU in the title or author's name

Season 1
Season 1 of criminal minds was released on September 22, 2005. This is the first season of sixteen. The first season had a total of 22 episodes. This season introduces a squad of FBI profilers that analyze that country's most twisted criminals. Arsonists, bombers, poisoners, and murders fill the season with action. Season 1 was a great kickoff to a thrilling TV show.
🔍 Read the first book in a series
🔍 Read a thriller
🔍 Read a book where a character commits a crime

Season 3
The third season of criminals minds released September 26, 2007. This season featured 20 episodes. Many different terrifying crimes were committed during this season including episode five, Seven Seconds, where a child is abducted at a mall. New characters appear in the show, while others leave.
🔍 Read the third book in a series OR with the number 3 in the page count
🔍 Read a book that was published in 2007
🔍 Read a book where a young girl is a character

If the idea is ok I can make more prompts, I'm just tired and wanted to at least throw the idea out there before I head to bed haha.

Looks great Lilli! When you finish, message the challenge to me. It may be a few months until we get to post it because we work a few months ahead! Thanks :)
