A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
A Monster Calls is a heartfelt novel about a mother and her son, Conor. Conor’s mother has been suffering through cancer for most of Conor’s life. He has to balance school, and taking care of the house while his mother is weak in bed. At school, kids’ have recently been making fun of Conor and his mom. When he gets home, he doesn’t tell his mom about any of it, because he’s scared he’ll just cause her more stress, which isn’t the best thing to do at the moment considering his mother’s state. Life is going fine for him and his mother, with his mother in bed, and him taking care of himself. This is, until one day, when his grandma shows up. Conor hates his grandma, and simply cannot stand her. Sadly, his mother knows this, but has no choice but to call over his grandma because she’s scared of her own wellbeing, and that Conor wouldn’t have anyone take care of him. His mother’s medication hasn’t been working for the past couple of weeks, causing her immense pain. She has to get sent back to the hospital, and Conor has to stay over at his grandma’s house for the meantime. While Conor’s hope may be strong for his mother’s survival, that might not be enough. With the kids at school, and the doctors at the hospital constantly telling him she’s most likely not going to make it, his hope is breaking down, slowly. Will hope keep her alive, or will it fail?
I thought this book was very interesting at parts, but I got bored sometimes. It was good, but I got tired very quickly, but overall I thought this book was pretty good. Some parts gave me a tingle. I recommend this book to anyone to likes scary/adventurous books.
