I have never understood how it could possibly be rude to read at the table when dining alone. Are you supposed to instead stare at the other customers? A blank spot at the wall? Flagellate yourself for the audacity of being seen dining alone?

I spoke old school tongue in cheek. My mother (who to her dying day read voraciously) would never hesitate to pop open a book even some days at the dinner table. I understood her need to know what's next.
I would panic without the choice of a good read at the drop of a hat.
Apples don't fall far from trees.
