Are secrets good or bad?

Dini Azmi The Maze Runner is an amazing book, no doubt, in spite of the fact that I've only read less than a quarter of the book . The most frustrating of all is the fact that there are too many secrets going on in the Gladers. Everything was a mystery to Thomas ever since he arrived at the Gladers and nobody seemed to want to answer his questions. It annoys me as a reader. Those questions that Thomas came up with such as "Who sent me here?" or "What's out there?" takes a long time to answer. Alby made it clear to Thomas that if he "told you everything, you'd die on the spot." What's with all these secrets? What harm can it bring to a person to know more? Wouldn't it make everything less complicated if the person knows what he'll be facing? What am I missing here?

I agree with you. I would be the same way, asking all of those questions if I were in Thomas' place. However, it's kind of difficult to explain the Gladers' secrecy. Knowing what the Gladers may tell a Greenie, said Greenie might have some sort of meltdown from all of the information at once. They may try to kill themselves, starve, run into the Maze without warning. If they were to tell Thomas everything, they would have to sit him down, slowly and calmly explain and keep a close eye on him. I can understand why they wouldn't tell him in the first place, making sure that whatever he does is safe and for survival. Telling him everything from start to finish seems like the right thing to do, obviously from Thomas' perspective, but it's honestly to keep them from any harm.
I would want to know everything as well, but maybe it was for the well-being of everyone, just to make sure there was no harm done in the end.

But isn't that the beauty? You ARE Thomas as you read. You have no idea what is going on and are dying to find out, just as he is! That's what's so cool about it :)

Totally agree

Ilana i also feel like the point of the story is that they were all a bit resentful that more and more people were coming and no one was coming WITH the information that they were looking for. i think that after 2 years, they were hoping that the next Greenie would be someone that knew how to get out or knew why they were there etc. and Thomas coming in and questioning it, after a bunch of folks seemed to recognize him after they'd gone through the changing just made them even more antagonistic.
