The Street Sweeper, by Elliot Perlman

This is a seriously remarkable book. Perlman's story takes place in modern day New York, but deals with the Holocaust and concentration camps of WWII Poland. It is beautifully done and captures the heartbreak of biases and injustices in both eras.
