The Maze Runner

Thoughts about the movie. (Emphasis on Minho and Gally!)

A few things that i noticed:
1) the character relationships were really downplayed in the movie. i get it, there's not a lot of time to talk through things, but i feel like there was a lot more depth that added to the tension in the book that we don't see in the movie
2) the way of speaking - i think the way that the book was written with their own dialect of sorts made it a bit more rich, and again, i get why it was downplayed in the movie, and i think that it actually worked to keep the flow going, but i kept expecting more 'glade' terminology to be thrown about.
3) we don't really get to see Thomas' immersion into the scene there. in the book, he spends time with all of the other jobs before he finally becomes a runner and it was immediate almost in the movie
Anyhow - i think that i'm actually going to re-read it now, and try really hard to read scorch trials since i couldnt finish it the first time around (don't know why) but i'm crossing my fingers just in case there's a movie :)

Book Gally and movie Gally were two different characters. In the book, he is crazy. He's mean on purpose, he's selfish, and he hates Thomas the moment he arrives in the Glade. BUT. Can you blame him? Gally is a very misunderstood character. The reason people see him as the villain is because he's so mean, hateful and kind of psycho. It's only because he SAW Thomas when he went through the Changing. And then, so did Ben, and then Alby. What he saw made him think what he thought of Thomas (if that makes sense). I completely understood the reasons for the things he did and said in the book. While others thought he was just being stupid, I got it. I was like yep, I know what you're talking about you crazy shank.
Movie Gally was different. He was more of a leader, and he had a stable mind throughout the film (until the last scene) and he was a bit of a jerk, yes, but how could you not be after everything started to change so suddenly? He was stronger in the film, and his reasons were more understandable in the movie.
Gally is my favourite character. Did I like these changes? I don't know, really. I loved the idea of him being so crazy and mean in the book. However, I have to take a bow to Will Poulter. Holy shuck, did he do a fantastic job. He was just perfect, and he's a fabulous actor.
So, the whole idea of how they solved the Maze. I liked the movie way, but the book way was so much more complicated. I didn't like the number sequence for opening the (what I can only assume was) Griever hole/home thing. I liked the words better, it was more realistic to me (not that anything here is really realistic). But I did love what they did, and I loved the look of the Glade, it was PERFECT.
Newt, Alby and Minho. First of all, Thomas Brodie Sangster did a FANTASTIC job. I was worried because in the trailer he seemed really serious, and not happy and nice like in the book. But he really was! He was such a cutie in the book, and I will never forget the look on his face after seeing the Glade and the Maze from above in the helicopter. It was just like, he has spent the last 3 years in there, and it was just... in a factory. That bit really, really broke my heart, more than anything else in the movie.
Minho was SEXY! He was perfect, I really liked him better than I did in the book! And there was no sarcasm with Minho in the movie, but I think that's okay. Frypan's humour in the movie made up for that (bless).
Alby was different too. He had that cool and calm personality, but he was a LOT nicer then he was in the book. I didn't like him that much at first in the book, because he was so dismissive of Tommy.
One thing that really annoys me, is that now that Dylan O'Brien has been Thomas, pretty much HALF the fans and ALL of the new-reader fans are saying he's their favourite character. Thomas wasn't anything compared to Newt and Minho, lets be honest. I feel like now everyone's seeing the fabulous Dylan O'Brien as Thomas suddenly they're all like "Oh my god I love him the most!" Does anyone else realise this??
And Teresa. I HATED her in the book, and still do. Kaya didn't change that for me. I will always hate that slinthead (notice how no one used this in the movie?) although she was perfect in the movie.
Overall, I shucking loved the movie. A 9.5/10 for me. I read this book about 3 years ago and have been obsessed ever since and have been waiting soooooo long for the movie. Now it's finally here, I am very happy.

Okay, serious thoughts about the movie: It was amazing! I loved every bit of it buuuuut ... was hoping that it had a little more of the elements from the book in it.
I only have two complaints: (view spoiler)[
1. How the maze kinda lost its purpose. It would have been really great if they at least kept the codes (words) and how they solved it. Seriously, one of the best parts of the novel is that particular plot twist. How the maze was not showing them a way out but was actually trying to spell the keywords. I'm pretty sure the viewers who haven't read it would have found it impressive, mind-blowing even. It would have really been awesome :( But I guess not everything can make it in the movie. especially since it would take time to solve the maps? I'm sure Wes Ball knew what he's doing and that James Dashner loved the film so why would I not?
2. The characters and their relationships. One of my favorite things about the novel is its characters and the relationships they had with each other, especially between Newt and Alby. They were best friends. Partners. When Alby got stung (in the book) Newt was so worried about him and when Alby rejected him when he called for Thomas, I remember Newt being a little mad and disappointed and hurt and it just showed how much he cared for Alby. Also, Alby's character was a bit too nice in the movie. In the novel I remember him being somewhat ... salty? Also Newt's and Minho's. They kinda lost their sarcasm and wittiness (both were what made me like the book in the first place because they provided comic relief in a novel that's supposedly serious and dark) and their sense of leadership. Minho and Newt are my favorite characters in the novel because of the authorative vibe they exude while still being likeable. In the film, Thomas kinda stole that from them. I get that he's the main character, but sometimes he seemed almost like a leader when he's not. It was still Alby and Newt and Minho who made decisions (also the council). But hey, I swear Minho still looked dominant in the film! He was still the best runner and it showed because of how well he knew the maze and did you notice when the camera focused on him many times. See his expressions? ASDFGHJKL! Ki Hong Lee did a good job portraying him < 3333 He was hot and badass and cool, goddammit. I WANT MORE. Also Thomas Brodie! I already liked him in Game of Thrones and I liked him more here. But as I said, I hope he was still that much of a leader-figure here as he was in the book. Alby was just different from what he was in the novel and I think I preferred that one over the nice Alby? I just liked how book-Alby gradually warmed up to Thomas. Teresa was my least favorite character in the book but Kaya Scodelario made me like her! Just a little bit, though. Her character was still not much but she had proven that she's not completely useless and that she could handle herself. Chuck was such a cutie! I wanted to keep him in my pocket, lol. Thomas, um, I really didn't like Thomas much, tbh. I like Dylan, but Thomas was a bit boring for me. (hide spoiler)]
I know that seems a lot of complaints but believe me, I loved the movie so much. I understand that they couldn't make it exactly like the book, so I just enjoyed what the movie had to offer. And enjoy it I did. I was very entertained and despite the fact that I have just read the book two weeks ago, I was still thrilled and on the edge of my seat as I watched the movie. It was nerve-wracking. And my friend told me she was holding her breath! I can say the same for the rest of the people who watched it with us. I could practically hear them release their breath once the suspense sequence was over.
This last part is dedicated for Gally. Let me tell you first that Gally was never my most nor least favorite character in the book. I just felt indifference towards him. I did not care for him at all. But let me just say, too, that Will Poulter gave him life. I seriously cannot say that he's an asshole even if he acted like one, but his actions were justified and therefore, understandable. In the book, he already hated Thomas when Tom was first introduced. In the film, however, he wasn't like that. He even shook hands with Thomas and like, congratulated him sincerely when he remembered his name! When he started acting like a jerk, it was because Thomas was breaking the rules. He had a point, honestly. They survived in the Glade for so long because they had all abided by their rules and regulations. In my opinion, Gally just really cared for their survival. There was always a valid reason as to why he did what he did. I even felt bad for him, tbh, lol. Thomas had just arrived in the Glade but he's already everyone's fave (something I seriously find a bit annoying), lmao. They were very unfair when it came to Gally. If only they made him more of a jerk, I would have been okay with them just being always against him. I don't know, but I was actually agreeing with him sometimes because I could see his point. And you would too, if you try looking at the perspectives of every Glader and not just Thomas's.
Well, that's all! Bottomline: Go watch the movie!
My rating: 9/10
