Kevin, around what year did you read this book? I find "a long time ago" means different things in this large group. This will help us narrow down the search.
Is this fantasy book for teens (young adults) or older adults?
Can you tell us more about main character - e.g., his/her age, jobs/skills/interests, rich/poor, marital status, family/friends, etc.?
Can you describe the setting (e.g., historic/contemporary Earth, fantasy world, medieval-type world)?

Thanks for the reply, but this is not the book I'm looking for.

I'm not sure when I read it (I read a lot and have always read a lot). It was probably the 80's or 90's.

This would be for adults / young adults. There is a love interest that helps him through his struggles with his growing power and the corruption of the currently powerful.

The main character, if I recall, is down on his luck at the beginning. I think he might be in the army, possibly AWOL from the loosing side running for his life.

Medieval/fantasy.

Are you sure? I found it on scifi.stackexchange.com, part of the description there is: "The story starts with a girl sitting at a deathbed to learn the word of power from the dying person. In this world everyone gets to learn one word to see if they have a talent for magic. If this is the case they can go to magic school to be trained and learn more words.
A word is inversely powerful to the amount of people that know it, so the more people know the word, the less powerful it is (speaking the word is painful).
Every word means more power and with three words (or five?) you become a god."
Have you looked at the other books in the series or by that author?

Thanks for following up. The description in the posted link sounds almost exactly like what I am looking for, but I thought that the protagonist who learned the words was male and kind of stumbled into hearing the first word.
The suggested book solution and following books in the series doesn't sound anything like what I remember. I may have to try reading it to find out.
Time and numerous book plots may have blurred my recollection.

As an example, the joined pentagonist. It may be from someplace else, but I thought there was a requirement added that they had to even out their ages. Everyone had to have the same time in control until everyone was caught up with the oldest.
For now I will call this solved.

The magic system is related to words. Once you pass on the word to someone else, you no longer have it so they are often passed on to some one on the death bed. I think that is where the story starts with the protagonist accidentally? coming into a room and getting the word from someone on their death bed.
The story proceeds with the protagonist getting more and more words until somehow he has nearly god like powers. I believe there are at least 2 if not 3 books to the story.
