I only remember a few things as I read it years ago, but I can't get rid of the niggling memory.
There is a winged demon, the book follows a number of people who are struggling to fight him alongside his army of people under the demons spell (the people are brought back from the dead, they are described very gruesomely with holes in them etc). The winged demon has a tower(?) beyond a great wall on a plain - within the tower, he feeds upon a 'pure blooded' boy, but he has to let the boy recuperate before he can feed on his blood again (I think I can briefly remember a fountain).
The boy has a sibling that managed to escape the tower and towards the end of the book they mount a rescue. At the end of the book, they manage to defeat the winged demon, which causes the army to drop from his spell, however, many of them only wish to be dead once more, asking the people around them to kill them.
Is that it? I purchased it about a year ago at a used book store. I only picked it up because of its cover. When I read your description I immediately ran to my booshelves because I could picture it. If that's it Glad I could help :D
