Sci-fi : Mage stuck in a time loop till he kills the dragon [s]

Hi people. Thanks for helping out :)

The mage is in a tower where he trains his younger self than the older one goes of to battle the dragon. This keeps happening till the dragon is killed. the magic is based on gems I believe which is mined from under the tower.
