It's officially Summer in Boulder Colorado!
Memorial Day weekend is the the biggest weekend for Boulder featuring the 3-day long annual Boulder Creek Festival and the Memorial Day Morning Race, Bolder Boulder.
Yesterday I spent all day at the Boulder Creek Festival and had lots of fun. I went on lots of carnival rides (Threw up one time & got very sunburned), bought me some food, new art, and t-shirts.
Today I noticed all the cars backed up coming into Boulder via Highway 36 aka The Boulder Denver Turnpike. Tomorrow morning I will be going to work very early before they block the roads off for the Bolder Boulder.
Exciting Times - wish you all were here :-)

AN ESSAY FROM STEPHEN WHITE:
September Floods, For What It's Worth
For what it's worth, some perspective.
I moved to Boulder in 1973.
I quickly learned that the climate where the Great Plains rise to abut the Rocky Mountains is quite arid. Boulder's weather is that of a high desert. Low humidity. Scant annual precipitation. Lots and lots of sunshine.
During my first few years in Boulder I got a taste of the peculiar natural forces that provide challenges to residents of the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. We deal with occasional blizzards, though not as many as outsiders think. The risk of mountain wildfire never goes away here. The rare tornado does touch down nearby. Hurricane force winter winds—down-slope winds called Chinooks—are common. And each summer we see a progression of stunning, fast-developing, lightning-rich, quickly dissipating monsoon thunderstorms.
Yes, Colorado gets annual monsoons.
Then, in 1976, came the Big Thompson Flood [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Tho...]. That tragic event in a river canyon below Estes Park in Larimer County, just north of Boulder County, taught me about the awful potential consequences of a risk I hadn't much considered: the flash flood.
I assimilated the risk of flash flooding based on what had happened in the Big Thompson. In my mind—I think in the minds of many who enjoy residing near the canyons that open into Colorado's Front Range communities—flash flooding was a watershed risk. When one of our frequent, isolated torrential summer thunderstorms didn't migrate quickly—as they almost always do—but instead lingered for hours over a particular mountain drainage system, the stream or creek or river at the bottom of the canyon could become swollen and dangerous within minutes. As the overwhelmed streams flowed into too-narrow creek beds, huge walls of water could rise in just an hour or two on the canyon floors and with little or no warning develop the power to devastate waterside communities downstream.
That was what had happened in the Big Thompson Canyon in 1976. A similar flash-flood phenomenon struck the nearby city of Ft. Collins in 1997. And it was that type of flash flood that I thought could threaten any one—or, if we were particularly unlucky, maybe two—of Boulder's mountain watersheds during a summer monsoon season. When I would hear risk managers talk about preparations for hundred-year floods along the Front Range, that was the risk I thought I was supposed to be preparing for—a sudden, catastrophic deluge affecting one or two watersheds west of Boulder.
The names of the vulnerable areas nearby will be familiar to anyone who has read my books: Coal Creek Canyon. Eldorado Canyon. Boulder Canyon. Sunshine Canyon. Four Mile Canyon. Left Hand Canyon.
Worst case scenario? I thought a couple of them might endure a flash flood. Someday.
But that is not what happened in Colorado this past week.
Despite four decades living along Colorado's Front Range, I had no schema for what did happen—is still happening—instead.
The communities in the foothills of the eastern slope of the Rockies, and those along the Front Range at the base of the canyons, have endured days, not hours, of torrential rains. The relentless monsoons that arrived later than usual this September— September is typically dry here; prior to this year, not one of the ten rainiest days in Boulder history had taken place in September—didn't impact one or two watersheds. For days now, tropical rains have inundated a hundred mile stretch of the mountains and high plains. Every nearby watershed is saturated. Many areas have received the equivalent of an entire year's precipitation in a matter of two days, in some locations half-a-year's precipitation in a matter of hours.
It is hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the rainfall. Thursday's rainfall was more than twice as much as had ever fallen on any calendar day in the city's history. In fact, Thursday's rainfall was twice as much as had ever fallen in any entire September in the city's history. The rainfall totals for the worst twenty-four hours of this storm almost equal the total for the rainiest single month in Boulder's history (May, 1995.) Yikes.
The number I just referenced are from an astonishing historical meteorological overview of the storm that has been prepared by Bob Henson at NCAR, the National Center for Atmospheric Research: www2.ucar.edu/atmosnews/opinion/10250.... I encourage everyone to read it.
We haven't suffered one flash flood this week. Or two. We have suffered flash floods in countless watersheds. And not in one stream or creek, or five. But in almost every creek I have ever heard of, and in some that I admit I did not know existed. We have had flash floods in spillways, and roadways, and highways. We've had them, and we continue to have them, in cities, in the country, in the mountains, and far onto the plains.
Sections of the roadways that hug the overwhelmed creeks and rivers in the breathtaking mountain canyons, roads that provide access and lifelines to entire mountain communities, are gone. Some bridges are gone. Utilities lines aren't interrupted; in many locations they are destroyed.
The flooding and the damage isn't limited to the towns built along the creeks, towns like Jamestown and Lyons and Estes Park, or in the bigger towns like Boulder that surround the mouths of the canyons where the creeks usually flow. Instead too much water in the streams and creeks has become too much water in the downstream rivers that flow east, and those rivers too have now flooded far beyond their banks and are inundating town after town after town and farm and farm farther onto the Great Plains.
I am trying not to be parochial. This isn't a Boulder County event. Devastation encompasses parts of El Paso County and Jefferson County and Douglas County and Denver County and Arapahoe County and Larimer County and Weld County and probably other counties I am not considering.
Distant farming communities along the South Platte River are being evacuated as I write.
We will likely not know for days or weeks the extent of the loss of life, the immense toll of personal suffering, and the unfathomable personal and public property damage caused by the September floods of 2013.
But I do know that I did not see this coming.
I suspect I am not alone in that.

Have you ever driven down Flood Street in St.George Utah during a rainstorm?

I am glad you're okay with all the flooding in Boulder. :-)

When my brother was in CO in July he was complaining about rain every day (i complained about rain every day when I visited NC in early July) but I guess that was nothing like you've been having lately.

:-) Thanks. It seems like the rain has stopped now. Yesterday, it was sunny in the morning so I stopped by Sunflower turned Sprouts Farmers Market where I used to work. I was going to buy a few things and say hi to my former co-workers like I do about once a week. The store was closed. Rain and Mud wiped the place out. I looked in the windows and it was really sad. Groceries had to be thrown out. The store will need all new fixtures, shelves and cash registers. One of my Sunflower turned Sprouts friends says they are going to still get paid while the store is closed and they are unable to work - I was really impressed to hear that, so I hope it's true.
The store hopes to re-open by the end of the September.
Here is a 12 second video clip of my former workplace - it was taken from a Marriott Hotel balcony. The Hotel shares a parking lot with the grocery store.

I was living in MA when the Twin Towers disaster occurred and had friends in NYC and for days I didn't know if they were okay.

I don't have cable either, but information is posted online so I have been checking in at www.9news.com :-) I'm not in at risk area. After today, rain is supposed to stop.
