The Scream
by Dobriša Cesarić
All the day the pain flourishes
Noticeable only in a quiet voice,
But the night comes, and it spreads-
And suddenly I scream with a verse
Screaming my scream into the world
To look around for an echo
I divided my heart
Among siblings, distant, unknown
My scream wanders, wanders, wanders
And when akin heart it startles
Does it suspect that it is released
From painful, sleepless night?

I can see why you found it inspiring, so much said and unsaid in a short poem, relating to life and writing. Many thanks for the translation

The title poem shows a strong sense of the narrator’s place in a present that is affected by both the past and the future. The poems are not pretentious: their tone is often conversational, showing a desire to communicate and share. They have an awareness of the impermanence of the present, the influence brought to future generations by past and present generations and how traditions can be continued or broken. In ‘Timelines’ the bride honours the past whilst thinking of the future.
As a woman I stood on the steps of
this Pugin church Newman dedicated –
studied by my past walled in the school
he built centred in fields of a lost village.
I’m ringed by my friends, family and maids
beside me a man who would be my future,
waiting to escort me to my tomorrow.
In a similar vein, ‘Traces of Time’ follows a watch from my grandmother’s Edwardian ruffles to My mother, her orphaned daughter,/ wore it pinned to her suit and
Gave to me
I tied it to my wedding dress
the face turned revealing a disk
of silver, tiny chased flowers,
links of gold string so small
only a caught hair reveals them
…
Now it lies with its chain curled
like two bodies folded together,
in my daughter’s white bag
that I hold for her
as she walks towards
the man who waits at the altar.
The watch becomes more detailed when in the possession of the present generations.
The poem’s subjects don’t just confine themselves to the domestic. A central grouping of poems explores themes of war, from ‘Silent Ones’ which acknowledges the unsung heroes from past wars – the mathematicians, geeks, technicians who weren't hero-worshipped like the soldiers but nonetheless played their part in ensuring the war was won. ‘No Nation’ looks at current conflicts and the role of the United Nations. It ends:
The boy moves towards the cornflowers
seduced by a colour he has never seen
the quiet of the day, the warmth of the sun;
as he approaches the flowers become men.
He stands transfixed by fear they wear blue
helmets, these men have every and no nation…
The poem captures the curiosity of the boy, tempered by fear when he wants to explore the novelty of what to him is a new colour, but then sees it worn by men in a military uniform. Elsewhere, ‘Petals’ is a more traditional memorial poem:
A single lily broken from its stem:
the petals curling back to expose
stripes of softer scarlet hidden within;
the anthers were heavy with pollen,
the pistils ready for a wing’s brush;
now they would never bear fruit.
The image of the lily is a fine sustained metaphor. Carolyn O’Connell also writes about memorials to civilian disasters, including the Ladbroke Grove train crash. In 1999, a turbo diesel train passed through a red signal (SN93) and crashed into a passenger train travelling in the opposite direction during the rush hour. Unfortunately the diesel fuel in the passenger train caught fire, resulting in 31 deaths, including the two train drivers, and more than 520 passengers sustaining injuries. The subsequent inquiry found that the newly qualified turbo driver’s training had been inadequate and that the siting of the signal combined with low autumnal sunshine meant the driver would have seen the signal as amber, meaning safe to continue, although the signal was actually red. Both train and rail companies were fined for health and safety breaches. A memorial garden has since been set up near the site. ‘Not a Station’ ends,
Along the perimeter wire rags flick languidly
as wings of perching birds, lifted
by slowly moving currents of a pre-storm heat
before flying over Trelick Towers.
Only the whistle of an unseen train
on the line below the memorial, the wilting flowers,
breaks the stillness as it passes signal SN93
speeding towards Reading or Oxfordshire.
The crash is echoed in the image of pre-storm heat as well as referenced directly in the name of the signal.
Timelines shows a compassionate, thoughtful poet using carefully chosen imagery in response to both personal and universal subjects.

Whispered Kisses: Classical Poetry for a Modern Time

I recently published my first book of poetry, She Of Thorn: Poems and Rhyme of a Heart Unkind - theme: unrequited love and loneliness.
Looking forward to the group's discussions.

My name is Justin and aside from being an author I like to consider my self a poet as well. I enjoy writing and reading poetry and have been looking for some new poetry groups here on GR. There aren't many and I was happy to see this one and noticed I have read the book of the lovely moderator of this group Tristesse :)
I have 3 published books, 2 of which are poetry. I look forward to discussing and meeting with you all

My name is Andreea (Ani) and I recently decided to make my work known to the world.
I have been writing for as long as I can remember, yet up until high school, I mainly wrote in German. It was around the end of my final year, that I took up writing in English. A while ago, I discovered that within me might slumber the secret essence of a poet. I embraced this essence and over the last 3 year, I gave birth to a couple of poems.
I am looking forward to sharing my work with you and also be enriched by your words, thoughts and feelings.
All the best,
Andreea

Other facts about me: I love music and play Bass guitar, I'm 25, and I live in East TN, USA. Other than that I'm an average guy that happens to love puns no matter how corny and lame they may be.

I'm Tabitha. I've been indie publishing for three years. Last month, I received the great honor of having a novel accepted by Awesome Indie Books, which I'm pretty thrilled about.
Poetry was my introduction into writing and teaching it to my high school students has revived my deep love for it. I've been looking for a group of " respectful and kind" poets who truly want to appreciate and support one another. Hoping to find that here and to get to read some lovely poetry :)

I know I already introduced myself but I thought I would again as I am going to try to become more active in this group. I consider myself an author, diverse and creative poet as well as a horror writer. Poetry was and is my first passion when it comes to writing. I first took up writing poetry in my Freshman year of high school where I used to write while in class and sometimes not even in English! From there I began writing it and really haven't looked back or stopped since. I prefer writing rhyming poetry although I have taken up to writing more prose and free verse. I try to expand my writing in any way I can as I am also aware that not everyone enjoys rhyming poetry all the time.
I have four works which are each unique in their own right. My first book The Macabre Masterpiece combines my two favorite types of writing of poetry and horror. It also has elements and is similar to that of Edgar Allan Poe whose an inspiration of mine so it really shows in my writing. My other work of poetry is called Like A Box of Chocolates which is a book of poems within many different genres. It shows me creative, strange and unique side of writing that's for sure.
When I'm not writing I enjoy spending way too much time on Twitter, watching football like it's a religion and when I can I enjoy the outdoors by going out for walks and getting inspired.

My name is JJ Stardal and I'm new here. I just self-published my first book (poetry) called 'letters to my rapist'. As the title perhaps hints; it's a doom and gloom sort-of-a-book and should probably come with a trigger warning. (I was in a very sexually abusive relationship a while back and that's what the book is about.)
Anyway, I love reading poems and discovering more and new (to me, anyway) poets. I'm happy to have found this site!

My name is Marquis (Mar-keese) Bynum and am new to Goodreads
