Dzianis Babko | 1 comments It was quite a while ago maybe somewhere in 1998, I remember reading an adventure dungeon book. I vaguely remember the beginning.

...Page 1 "You have entered a dungeon. There is a old man sitting down. You can go left or right. Turn to page 54 to go left. Turn to page 3 to go right."

... Page 3 "You encounter a big door. It seems closed. Do you want to open or turn back? Turn to page 1 to go back. Turn to page 12 to try to open it"

... Page 12 " Door still doesn't open. You turn back. Go to page 1"

That's how all of the book was. Do this and go to some random page to continue, or do that to go to another random page. There was also kind of dice combat involved as well when you encountered monsters.

If anybody knows the name of the book or the genre of such books that would greatly help. Thank you.

Dzianis, did any of Cruth's suggestions check out or are you still looking?

Shanna_redwind | 852 comments I remember that snippet you have. I think it was an example solo adventure in a role playing system book.
Maybe Fighting Fantasy: The Introductory Role-playing Game or
Maelstrom

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments The game-adventure books link (above) covers most of the book(s). However, this might've been a stand-alone solo game adventure as well. Tunnels and Trolls has a number of these, for example.

Erica Moomin Halliday | 38 comments Could it be Deathtrap Dungeon by Ian Livingstone, part of the Fighting Fantasy series? It was the first adventure gamebook I ever read as a kid, and really got me hooked on the genre! :) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

Although I've just re-read your post (I skim-read it first and got too excited that I might be able to help, haha) and realised you said you thought those excerpts were an approximation of the beginning, in which case it doesn't sound quite right for Deathtrap Dungeon, which had a much more detailed introduction about the main character finding out about this dungeon challenge and travelling to the city of Fang for it etc.

There were others in the Fighting Fantasy series involving dungeon-like settings in part of them, e.g. City of Thieves (I think), but again they all had very detailed beginnings introducing you to the world and the challenge ahead, as well as how to play the book etc.
