I think the whole idea of the body kit is really cool. I'm enjoying reading about Sidra experiencing what it can do.

I'm also loving the look into Pepper's youth, like it's straight out of a dystopian novel. I'm curious to see where it will go.

I'm 132 pages in (view spoiler)

Are you enjoying it so far @Charlie, @Melissa, @Rob?

I also only started yesterday :)

I am absolutely loving it! One of the best books I've read this year by far.

At first, starting this, I was a bit sad that we don't seem to see the Wayfarers crew again. I don't read any blurbs and somehow expected them to be present as well, even as side characters... But no. That doesn't mean that I don't like Pepper and Blue and Sidra and the others, they grew on me very fast and I love them, but I really miss the others :(

Re: 217 pages Agreed! It doesn't feel info dumpy at all and I love how rich the world is and how real the characters feel, the author is amazing in writing this kind of thing. It doesn't bother me at all that the book again is rather slow and without much of a plot (view spoiler)

And her reaction to AI is the same as her (predecessor's...) buddy in the previous book! ❤️❤️

I am hesitant to jump into the third book given the meh reviews of some of our fellow Fantasy Buddy Reads members.

Even though not much happens in terms of action, I think I enjoyed this book even more than the last one, I just adored Jane and Sidra's personal journeys.
@Rob I loved that bit at the end too, very satisfying. That whole end scene gave me all of the wonderful feels.
I didn't realise the 3rd book had bad reviews, now I'm hesitant to look at any of them.
Feel free to wait and judge for yourself, but most of us just felt that the 3rd book didn't really have much to drive it forward... it was just a long series of slice of life vignettes...
You can see it had an effect on the average rating... 4.17, 4.36, 4.14... usually the first book in a series has the lowest rating, because less people keep up-to-date with a series, and people that don't like the first book don't continue with the 2nd, etc...
Among my friends list, I'm showing a 2.83 average, from 6 reviews...

Wow, that's pretty worrying. I'll definitely still read it but I might give myself a break before jumping straight in.
Regardless, I'll try the 4th Wayfarer book when it comes out, and wouldn't mind trying To Be Taught, If Fortunate when it comes out tomorrow, either...

I'm feeling like I might have to read book 3 and see for myself 😂😂
I've seen reviewers complaining about a lack of plot in the third one. But don't they all lack a plot? Although if book 3 has even less of a plot, I might not be down with that! 🤔🤔
EDIT: I didn't see your message @Iain... hmmmm, not encouraging...

I loved how Tak changed in my mind's eye when xe went from male to female. I'm ashamed to admit how very he..."
I'm glad you loved it!! I agree with everything you've said about both Pepper and Sidra. I wish we could have more books with these characters, this time about their future.

20% At first, when the random images were triggered, I wondered if they weren't residual olfactory memories. Perhaps it's the dystopian horror aspect of Jane's story, but it made me think: what if the kit wasn't grown, but harvested?
Then you soon find they are a programmed feature. Cool cool. (Phew! False alarm!)
The everyday scenes contrasted with childhood flashbacks to that dystopian horror though. It really punctuates the terror to suddenly return to the future.

I think that this was one of my favorite parts that turned me to mush.

I liked the programmed features, I thought they were creepy when first encountered but cool really.

I love how well all of the overwhelming and fraught emotions are described. The feeling of "too much." Thought breaks down into its most simple, visceral components.

I think in some ways I enjoyed this one more. It has a narrower focus, and the tension between the two storylines builds and builds as they draw closer together. The dual past/present structure lent itself to all these realizations, big and small.
I also see how as a sequel this book has much of the worldbuilding done already, so it has that freedom of a sequel for example to throw in Aandrisks or other alien races without having to devote as much time to explaining their social structure. I did enjoy getting more Aeoleon characters, but truly, Pepper way the one who stole the show for me. Just... wow.

Yep yep, everything is back up and running in my city at least. It was bad in other parts of the country, but for me it just meant that stores/transportation shut down for a couple days. I didn't lose power or anything either, so I just holed up inside and read.

Glad you're enjoying it! It was such an emotional roller-coaster for me. I loved it, it was heartbreaking, it was then endearing, back to heartbreaking. So may feelings..."
Yay, thanks. :)
I think I also needed something pure in my life. I think I'll go on to read the 3rd one, Record of a Spaceborn Few, because even if it's slice-of-life, I have a feeling I'll be okay with that if I can get another helping of emotional competence porn. To Be Taught, If Fortunate, is also on my TBR list for after that.
