Greetings, Earthling Readers. Author Gavin Atlas has been brought in for questioning about the new book, SNAPSHOTS OF SEDUCTION, a photo fiction book featuring an original short story by Gavin and the photography of Garrett Matthew of model Cody Allen. Gavin is also the author of the new collection of short stories, The Full Ride, also from Lethe Press.
Strobing Limelight: What inspired the story in Snapshots of Seduction?
Gavin Atlas: Garrett’s photos and the concept Steve Berman wanted me to form a story around. He asked me to create a daddy photographer meets stud-pup go-go boy encounter, and I did my best to flesh out characters, create nervous tension, and make them a good match for each other.
SL: What did you enjoy about this story most?
GA: The way the characters flirt. They’re both stubborn, but sweet-natured. Joseph, the photographer doesn’t want to move too fast. Cody has an answer ready for Joseph’s every objection. It was fun.
SL: How did you choose your setting?
GA: Steve let me set the story in Las Vegas. Both characters are from out of town. Obviously, the city is known for being conducive to relaxing one’s inhibitions. That helped me make Cody more at home and Joseph more out of his element and more subject to Cody’s mischief.
SL: How important was romance in Snapshots of Seduction?
GA: I like the idea of my stories not just showing people having sex or feeling lust, but why they are having sex and why they want each other in particular. In short stories, you don’t have much time to build a relationship, so I usually use a reunion “device.” Joseph and Cody have met twice before, but they’ve never “consummated” the relationship. The delayed gratification makes it a bigger moment, I think, and their ongoing friendship shows a lot of devotion to making each other laugh.
SL: In a hundred words or fewer, why shouldn’t my people conquer Earth?
GA: There are a lot of problems that enlightened leaders from other planets might solve, but that word you used, “conquer.” See, now that doesn’t sound enlightened. You can be friends and offer constructive criticism, or you can read Harry Turtledove’s Second Contact, which I promise you is an entirely true story. So beware.
SL: What will readers see from you in the future?
GA: I’m working on a project under another name. If that works out well, I might write less as Gavin, but I would like to continue, I think. Even if I, as Gavin, write stories that edge toward literary and aren’t meant to arouse, that might be what I can do best and be happiest with.
SL: Thank you, Gavin, you are free to go. Gavin Atlas can be reached on Facebook, Livejournal, Authorgraph, and Twitter. Contact him at gavinatlas@gmail[dot]com for a free story.
