Sarah Gibbs (sarahtrg) Hello! I’m a newbie to this group and I’ll post my intro in the proper forum after I submit this post.

I first got into baseball as a nine year old because one of the sports channels was all we got on TV (I lived overseas). No one else in my family is into baseball but I basically taught myself the game purely from watching it on TV and listening to the commentary... I am now 33 years old and I still love the game but in recent years I have realized there is so much more to it than just watching as a fan.

I want to learn all the technical and physical aspects of the game; specifically regarding pitching and to borrow a quote from one of the analysts from MLB Network, I want to learn “the game within the game”...

Additionally, I’d like to learn more about the business side of baseball (perfect timing as the trade deadline just past)...

So I’d really appreciate if any of you guys could recommend some good books to get me started on my path to understanding the game I love so much on a much deeper level.

Cheers! 🙂
Sarah

Michael Linn | 11288 comments First of all, welcome Sarah. There are some extremely knowledgeable folk here that read & watch tons of baseball. Most of the major discussions are on the 2019 second half discussion page. Scoot there, introduce yourself & it shouldn`t be long before tons of info will come your way.

Hi Sarah and welcome to the group! Please feel free to look around the various threads and jump in. For the best one on baseball talk, hop on to the "Baseball 2019 2nd half" thread. BTW, do you have a favorite team?

For the business side of the sport, there are many good selections. One was our book of the month selection in July, Astroball: The New Way to Win It All. Another good one, while rather thick, is The Game: Inside the Secret World of Major League Baseball's Power Brokers

Okay, I get the part of being an Angels fan, but however did you get to be a Cubs fan. Have to think there is a story there, somewhere. Oh yes, welcome to the group. I am sure a moderator will be along shortly to also say hello and welcome.

Hi Liv and welcome to the group. Our other moderator Brina is also a Cubs fan so you’ll have something in common there!

Harold Kasselman | 19190 comments I am a technophobe. I left my mouse back home. I ordered and received a new one: it didn't work. I bought a USB? thingamaroo, put it in, but it still won't work. I want to copy and paste. Can I do that without a mouse???

Liv, I'm in L.A. and I'm a huge Dodgers fan. Don't let anyone tell you who to root for! You support your team, love baseball, and have fun. This Dodgers fan has your back. The Angels have two of the best players in baseball and I hope their pitching improves soon.

Hi Sarah and Liv, welcome to you both. Yes, I’m the other moderator who is a Cubs fan. I have a daughter in 5th grade also 7th, 9th, and 11th. I work full time as a pre school teacher so I’m usually last to see everything. Don’t let anyone tease you about your sports team allegiances. When I was your age the Cubs won their division for the first time in a long time and all of the so called White Sox fans decided to become bandwagon Cubs fans even though they were fake. So what if the Dodgers have been better. You have the best player in baseball, the only two way player in baseball, and the best manager- that is bias on my part. Not sure if he’s the best manager but I love him. If it makes you feel better, I am a Cubs fan living in a division rival’s city and I get grief all the time. That’s part of what being a fan is about. I really do hope your pitching improves so Trout can go to the playoffs.

Harold Kasselman | 19190 comments I have read Moneyball and The Shift. They were excellent. I'm not all that interested in The Arm, but thank you.
