SOLVED. Xanth novel about a magical quest. [s]

In this Xanth novel, someone (I forget name, gender, species) wants to achieve the status of Main Character because s/he believes that such characters don't die (or at least don't die young) and is anxious to become one. I think this character may be female but I'm not 100% certain about it.

I've been through the synopses of all the Xanth novels and don't find anything that matches this description. Perhaps this person's desire was a side quest to the main one. The character found these other people traveling to fulfill some task and wanted to join up with them in an attempt to gain his/her desire. (Perhaps s/he thought there would be safety in numbers.)

The character is Okra Ogress, and the book is The Color of Her Panties. She wants to be a major character, because nothing bad ever happens to major characters.
