Mrsbooks | 399 comments What did you all think of this weeks episode?

message 2: by Patty (new)

Patty | 190 comments I'm blaming BJR for my horrible migraine today! It was so good so intense and I think I had my eyes covered for about half of it. Cannot wait until next week

message 3: by Susan (new)

Susan | 17 comments I had to force myself to watch at points (in a good way)...so intense.

message 4: by Susan (new)

Susan | 17 comments My favorite parts were all Dougal-centric this week. 1. When he indirectly complimented Claire when General Thomas said she is good at ordering men around. 2. When he scared the hell out of Hawkins and chased him away from kicking Claire just by LOOKING at him. I think Hawkins peed a little.

message 5: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 107 comments The beating scene was horrific. So much more then I'd imagined.

This episode was intense!

message 6: by Nancy B (new)

Nancy B | 1 comments It was brilliantly filmed. I was in awe of the drama between Claire and Randall and they never moved from the table. Loved the scene where Claire and Dougal stopped to drink water. More than perfect. Can't believe there are only two more episodes. I've watched each episode multiple times.

message 7: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolmo) | 42 comments The flogging scene was just horrific. Don't ya just abhor Randall!!!!! An excellent episode; looking forward to the next one. Don't want season to end. :-(

Loved those scenes too Susan!

message 9: by Patty (new)

Patty | 190 comments Have they announced when the 2nd half of season 1 will air?

message 10: by Dawn (new)

Dawn No announcements yet, but I am betting on February. Too much happening in this episode for me to pick a fave. Dougal agreeing Claire knows how to order men about...the whole description of Jamie's whipping, "we were creating a masterpiece,"...Jamie agreeing he is willing to start the honeymoon...The men waiting around for her answer, Claire stomping up and grabbing the bottle. Yup...too much!

message 11: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments I loved how they portrayed the British officers in a way we didn't see in the book. We saw the they were not all horrible even though what was happening was horrible. There was Jeremy Foster who wanted to save Claire from what he perceived to be a bad situation. They treated Claire well (at first) A few of them genuinely looked embarrassed then they were insulting Scots and Dougal. The one kept trying to clarify what was being said to keep the peace. The one hated that he was being ordered to kick Claire (but he did it which shows how military men will follow their commanding officer whether it is right or wrong) Most were bigoted assholes but that is surely how many acted back then. The intensity of this episode was so well done between Jamie's reaction to being flogged to BJR's pure sadistic evil to Claire's desperation and horror to the abuse. If this does not win an award it surely is because the game is fixed.

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) What does Claiir say to Jamie in the trailer when he starts to kiss her and he steps back real fast, did everyone but me understand her?I have noticed that they have made the episodes easier to understand as they are repeated but I think I have more trouble even then with Clairs accent than any of the others.

Dawn,
Amen!!!!!!!!!

message 13: by Dawn (new)

Dawn She asked him to tell her about his family lol

message 14: by Kathy Anne (new)

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) Oh, Dawn your kidding-aren`t you? Where do you think she huffed off to at the end of this episode so fast?
I didn`t watch any of the flogging ,or very little of Clair and BJR so now I have found out the last 10 min is free of all that and her and Jamie get the few short minutes together.I am starting to miss Jamie I do hope they let him in his wedding episode.

message 15: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 45 comments I also thought the flogging scene was awful. I had a hard time watching it, especially when pieces of Jamie's back were hanging by a thread of skin. The sad thing is, I'm sure future scenes with Jamie and Black Jack will be even more horrific and harder to watch. :(

message 16: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments That was my favorite episode... Full range of emotions watching it and I cannot wait till next weeks episode.

message 17: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Kathy Anne...nope. You can watch it on youtube.

Stephanie...that was only the flogging...i am positive the rape scene is goung to be worse, I can barely listen to it on audio.

Lisa (mlliu) Mrsbooks wrote: "What did you all think of this weeks episode?"

Thanks for starting the discussion. I've been reloading the forum all day but wasn't sure if we had to wait for a moderator to post. I can appreciate this episode on a formal level, like what people have said about the fact that so much is communicated between Claire and BJR over that table, in looks and verbally, and our getting a sense of what it must have been like for the British officers and soldiers (liked Foster and wished there were more of him, but I guess he served his purpose).

At the same time, I really dislike watching scenes of mental (and physical) torture, so it was hard for me to sit through the episode knowing what was going to come. I had to skip through the flogging scene.

I loved the last five minutes of the episode, however, and will certainly rewatch that. I liked that Jamie calls himself Claire's friend, which I don't remember him saying in the book.

message 19: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 45 comments M. - I was very glad that they ended the episode on a cheerier note. I felt like the rest of the episode was so dark that it was nice to lighten the mood at the end. I can't wait for next week's episode! I'm sure Jamie is going to make a gorgeous groom.

I love rereading that part of Outlander, when Claire's jaw drops when she sees him in full Highland regalia!

message 21: by Harriet (new)

Harriet Schultz | 15 comments I had to switch stations and watch a few minutes of Pretty Woman during the flogging scene. Too graphic for me.
BJR is even more depraved and sadistic than in the books. Tobias Menzies has nailed the character. He makes my skin crawl.

message 22: by Patty (new)

Patty | 190 comments Did you see Brian Fraser in the flogging scene?

message 23: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments I loved it! Best one yet! My husband is thoroughly addicted now. Can't wait till next week.

message 24: by Jena (new)

Jena (outlanderfan74) | 49 comments Remember when you were small, if you'd think you saw a bug in your house or something? And you'd climb up in the chair, and curl your feet underneath you instead of putting them on the floor, so the bug wouldn't "get you."

I had that exact sensation last night when BJR said the flogging was "beautiful." If this actor doesn't win every award for this portrayal, everything in the world of television is wrong. He was incredible!

message 25: by Dawn (new)

Dawn I completely agree Rachel.

message 26: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments Brian Fraser:

I need to rewatch this episode. I missed seeing Brian, I was looking for him.

message 27: by Dawn (new)

Dawn He was standing just behind Dougal during the flogging. Even though I was looking for him, I did not know it was him until DG posted it on FB

message 28: by Cathrin (new)

Cathrin When Dougal said he would love to grind Claire's corn (or something along those lines). *lol*

message 29: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments Omg I know that was too funny!
I also cracked up when bjr poured that generals wine out and told Claire he was an utter ass.
Sam did so well in his acting during the flogging scene. My heart wrenched for him.

message 30: by Patti (new)

Patti | 11 comments I agree with everyone's comments so far. It's been 10 years since I read the first book and I was so pleased when I remembered the virginity lines...as long as Claire didn't mind that he was a virgin and that at least one of them should know what they were doing :-)

message 31: by Mrsbooks (new)

Mrsbooks | 399 comments I found it difficult to watch the whipping scene. I don't mind reading violence as much as I do watching it. I thought the book description was quite similar but I guess my mind doesn't have to go there when I read it. Watching the show I kept looking away from the screen. I don't like watching stuff like that either.

I loved the added scenes with BJR. It was definitely a high intensity episode. But I wonder if it would have felt that way for those who hadn't read the book and knew what was coming?

I can't wait to see next weeks episode. Jamie and Claire finally get to start spending more time together!! yahh

message 32: by Janet (new)

Janet (justjanet) | 131 comments I had to look away during the flogging....too much blood. I can't even watch my own blood being taken, I'm such a wuss.
It must have been hard for Claire to separate her loathing for BJR from her love for Frank after the way BJR mistreated her. Hard to understand what that would have been like to be staring "your husband" in the face and it not being him at all.

Lisa (mlliu) Janet wrote: "I had to look away during the flogging....too much blood. I can't even watch my own blood being taken, I'm such a wuss.

I had to keep reminding myself of that, when I willed Claire to not trust BJR or to even smile back at him, because I knew what was coming. But of course, BJR looks like (and sounds like?) her husband, so it's only natural for her to assume the best of him.

Mrsbooks: I skimmed the most graphic scenes in the book as well. I just can't deal with violence when it's on that personal of a level.

message 34: by Cathrin (new)

Cathrin This was already so intense, I am dreading the things coming. When I read the future BJR Scenes in the books I literally felt sick. I am not sure I actually want to see that.

message 35: by Kathy Anne (last edited Sep 15, 2014 07:59AM) (new)

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) It`s hard for me to believe a nurse ,especially one that's seen what war is like ,to trust BJR when she had seen Jamie`s back and heard his story of the flogging.BJR is crazy evil and sadistic and what got into that women that she ignored all the red flags and the physical evidence. Maybe too much wine again at dinner?

message 36: by Mrsbooks (new)

So true! It's the sign of a great actor when they make you hate (or love) them and I think we all know which emotion we feel here!

Thank you for pointing out BF. I was wondering where he was in this heartbreaking scene. SH did an excellent job; could hardly watch it!

MissSusie | 146 comments A few things I wrote down while watching:

She does know how to order men around.
Aye she's good at that .

Holy cow when they show Sam from the side his chest muscles are huge .

I found myself screaming at the tv no he's lying Claire don't fall for his bs
His knees were shaking and stomach butterflies because it was turning him on, "what we were creating there, that boy and I was a masterpiece."
I guess this is a book spoiler so (view spoiler) It was truly a mesmerizing scene I think because we know what happens, I would be curious how it affected people who haven't read the books. But amazing acting by Tobias .And Cait's acting when BJR punched her in the stomach my god I swear I felt it ,what an amazing scene as she is catching her breath and the realization coming across her face that he is not Frank and is as dark as all the Scots have said .

I think it is because when she looks at him she sees Frank and she wanted to believe there was good in him because of Frank.

I felt that way too but I also felt she was trying to be hopeful more than anything. I mean the guy just showed her how truly crazy he was. If there was nothing inside him to redeem then she knew she was going to be in A LOT of trouble. I think I'd be looking for any possible goodness and praying it was there too.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Please do not post book spoilers that will happen in the future in this thread. We have a LOT of new members joining who are just finding the series and haven't finished the book or read further yet.

To be clear, we should not be discussing any event that happens after this episode at all, unless you put it in the clickable spoiler tags.

This is very important for the enjoyment of new members.

The bold is not me yelling, but I just don't want it to be missed in all this conversation! Thanks guys, for all your help in keeping the group clear and clean.

message 43: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cawils_99) I was out of town for this episode, so I just finished watching and I actually cried when Jamie was being flogged. Even though I have read the books several times, seeing it was so much more intense for me. I was truly disgusted with BJR and could feel how cruel and sadistic he really was. I was so impressed with the acting by both Sam and Tobias. Can't wait for the next episode and for a different kind of intensity. ;)

message 44: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (EllenChristine) | 245 comments Seeing it all is way more real, and brings home the vile nature of Frank's ancestor. Jamie has lived through that and more bad is yet to come.

message 45: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (EllenChristine) | 245 comments thank you for starting the thread. Yes, it was quite an episode. Tobias is able to convey so much in his facial movements and expressions that we know this is not Frank we are seeing. heirloom razor or no heirloom razor. I"m stymied by the ability of these two actors, Tobias and Sam, to create such a viable interpretation of that scene. And make it believable. Props to the prosthetic people. What a job. My method of getting through something like this is to examine costume details. And try not to look at the gore.

message 46: by Kathy Anne (last edited Sep 15, 2014 03:38PM) (new)

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) My method to get thru it on the screen is to get the hay out of Dodge on another station and in the book to just not read it.And if I had been anywhere near BJR I wouldn`t care if he looked like God,I`d have been checking out that window to see how far I had to drop.

message 47: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Throughout this entire book series I have considered most of Claire's decisions to have little intelligent rationale and more impulsive. She gets into so much trouble in the 18th century.

message 48: by Ness (last edited Sep 15, 2014 04:16PM) (new)

Ness (ness-reads) | 47 comments this episode is so intense!! Tobias was BRILLIANT!!! I expect him to be nominated for many awards!! Claire' and BJ' exchange, how even if we jnow the book they managed to surprise us, the flogging scene, Jamies back, just waw !! I was pressing my knuckles to my mouth and just making weird sounds but COULDN'T look away.
I am sad when I think we only have two left but fuck I can't wait for next week!
