ABANDONED. SCI-FI: Group of male space explorers who land on an alien planet.

These men arrive am an alien planet with a breathable atmosphere and encounter three races of non-hostile aliens living in harmony, each with a different role in their society. For instance one race seems to be the rulers or overlords and they all tall and thin, and live in the mountains. Another one of the alien races are made up of miners, living underground. Each race inhabits their own terrain and the protagonists find out about this hierarchy from an ancient tablet or manuscript that they find depicting the three races. The men did not have advanced technology, but were equipped only with early 19th century weapons like hunting rifles. This leads me to believe that this story was written awhile ago. I read this book in 2006, in English, at least 200 pages, fairly certain that the author was male.
