SOLVED. Sci-fi book female protagonist can jump to alternate reality. [s]

In the past month I read a book I picked up from my local library. The female protagonist was a reporter. She got fired from her job because she was pursuing and article that would have implicated her bosses in a criminal matter. She discovers she can shift to an alternate reality. That alternate reality is more like the middle ages.
My description does not do the book justice. But I think it's enough that if you have read it you will recognize it.
I returned the book and promptly forgot the title and author, so It's a bit difficult for me to read book #2 in the series. My library does not keep a history of books patrons have checked out.
I'm hoping to hear from someone soon.

THANK YOU! I picked that book up in the library while waiting for my wife. I enjoyed it and was looking forward to the next book. I feel like an idiot for not remembering the title or the author. Thanks again for bailing me out.

The books have a complicated publication history by the way. Orginally there were six books, but a few years back the author republished the series as three (bigger) books with some revisions/corrections and now there are two books done in the sequel series with the third due later this
year I think.
