Katie Westfahl | 4 comments From what I can remember I a white woman falls in love with a slave. I want to say she is married and her husband is the owner of this slave. I think the woman's name is Lizzy but I am not sure. At the end of the book, I want to say someone has the shackle or manacle that this slave wore on their desk. Does this book sound familiar to anyone?

Is it for adults?
When did you read it?

Noor Al-Shanti Could this be The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers?

The shackles played a big role in that book and I'm pretty sure there was a character named Lizzy. It had different characters from different generations of the same family so it focused on more than one person.

Katie Westfahl | 4 comments I would have read this book in 1998 or 1999 I believe. Yes, it was an adult book.

Natasha | 250 comments I'm currently rereading A Place Called Freedom by Ken Follett and there are some similarities with what you posted! Lizzie is a main character and she falls for a man who is later owned by her husband. At the beginning an unnamed modern character digs up a broken iron collar in a garden and puts it on a desk. The book is set in eighteenth-century Scotland and Virginia. Does this sound familiar? One edition of this book has a red, white, and blue cover, but a ship: A Place Called Freedom by Ken Follett but there's another edition with a chain and different color scheme: A Place Called Freedom by Ken Follett

Katie Westfahl | 4 comments It could be. I'll have to check this one out. Either way, it looks like a good book.
