Welcome Sergio! Check our group bookshelf, those are all books we have discussed (or plan to discuss). Quite a few space opera books include some kind of magic or psi powers, if you want something closer to fantasy. I read a lot of fantasy myself as well as the SF.

Welcome Sergio, I hope you enjoy the group and we're always interested in what members are currently reading.

message 358: by Michael (new)

Michael LaVoice | 6 comments Hi everyone! There's a lot of discussion to catch up on here so I have been lurking for a bit. I felt now is a good time to step out of the shadows and say HI!
So, HI!
Here's the basics.

Name: Michael LaVoice
Favorite Books: Too many to list, but I LOVE the Stainless Steel Rat series, and Honor Harrington!
Favorite Genres: Space Opera/MilScifi/Crime and mystery fiction
Favorite TV shows: Firefly, Resident Alien, The Mentalist, Justified, The Expanse, tons of cop shows.
Favorite Movies: Star Wars, (ESB) Highlander, The Matrix, Star Trek 2, the Wrath of Khan, Tron Legacy, Aliens...the list goes on.
Favorite Food: Japanese Hibachi
Day Job: Research assistant at St Jude
Hobbies: Writing (I am a Goodreads Author, but since it only pays a few bills here and there, it’s more of an expensive hobby at this point.) My YouTube channel is also kind of a hobby.
Other: Before I was a writer, I was a reader of scifi and fantasy, as well as crime fiction and mystery. Someday, I will find a way to mix all those loves onto one successful series!

I am married with seven kids (hers, mine, and ours), two dogs, and a cat (for balance) and I call the flood plains of West Tennessee my home! I have an office stuffed to the gills with action figures and star ship models, and the occasional movie poster. It feels great to be here with fellow Space Opera Fans!

We’re Jef and Mindy. We love sci‑fi that mixes humor, absurdity, and big “what if” ideas—think Hitchhiker’s Guide meets Spaceballs. Excited to join the conversations and discover new favorites here.

Welcome, Jef and Mindy! Have you read Bob's Saucer Repair by Jerry Boyd? A hillbilly repairing a flying saucer seems to fit your description of humorous and absurd.

Michael LaVoice | 6 comments I know we're not supposed to plug our own stuff on here too much, but I do write humorous space opera. Galaxy's Most Wanted might be right up your alley. and I second Bob's Saucer Repair as a recommendation.

A warm welcome to the group Alexis. Our READER nominations thread for September has just opened - why not make a nomination? Are there any Space Opera books you've been thinking of reading?

message 377: by Damon (new)

Damon Wise (serwiseguy) | 1 comments Hello! Damon here! I have been attracted to space opera for the longest time. As a kid I was in love with Star Wars and still am. I would say Star Wars was the reason I fell in love with the genre. Which then evolved into a love for space. Some of my favorite books include Jurassic Park, Red Rising, Hunger Games, Slaughterhouse Five, the Shining, The Martian, and many more. I generally prefer to read scifi, fantasy and horror. I do branch out and read other genres but those three I stick to the most. A few of my favorite shows are Supernatural, Resident Alien, Game of Thrones, Clone Wars/Bad Batch, Big Bang Theory, South Park, The Boys, and more. I really am an all around nerd. Superheroes, Star Wars, Star Trek, you name it. By day I am a quality specialist for my company. By night, I game a lot lol. I spend a lot of time playing Star Wars The Old Republic with some friends and am currently in the process of writing a campaign for Star Wars 5e.

I am currently reading Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. This series has easily become my favorite series I have read. I haven't devoured a series this fast in ages. I have other series on my list to read after. But I am always up for recommendations. Next in line, I am thinking either Suneater or Expanse.

T.W. Alexander (twalexander) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I’m T.W. Alexander 👋 Excited to find this group—it’s nice knowing I’m not the only one geeking out over space opera worlds.

I’m into Harry Potter, Dune, and Iain M. Banks’ Culture series, and when I’m not reading, I’m usually writing or homeschooling my 5-year-old. TV-wise, I love The Blacklist and The Dark Knight trilogy—especially the ones with Bane and Two-Face.

Looking forward to connecting and learning from all of you!

message 383: by Tapio (new)

Tapio Tiihonen | 1 comments Fair maidens and noble sirs, Neo-Renaissance brothers and sisters of the stars. I write Rome the way you read galaxies — emperors and rebels, collapsing empires, and battles that echo with universal epic flair. My invincible Roman blaze carries a hilarious Youngstown smile into the Middle Ages with charm and humor. My flair isn’t safe — it strives to be true, with sword and pen, in the historic spiral, in the quantum mirror of smaller mirrors.

If you read space opera, you are welcome here, Tapio. We like spaceships, not medieval history.

message 385: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 15 comments Hi group! I'm Juliana and a member for quite some time, when I was a lot more here on Goodreads, but life happens and my reading and online times had to take a step back.
Now I'm slowly reading more (thanks too to audibooks) and having a bit of time to come back to reading groups.

I'm a reader since I can remember, my taste in genres are broad but fantasy and sci fi are my favorites.

I have so many favorite books, but a few of then are Foundations trilogy by Asimov; The Final Empire by Sanderson; Harry Potter series by Rowling, The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, THe Murderbot series by Wells, A Batalha do Apocalipse by Spohr, To be Taught, if Fortunate by Chambers and Childhood's End by C. Clarke

Beside fantasy and sci fi I really enjoy a smart romance, some paranormal and mistery books.

To see I like sci fi movies, medical dramas, periods dramas and ocasionally some romance too.

I'm a full time mom and manager of my home and family affairs living far away from my home country without any other family near apart from my husband and kids.

And I love to read, dance, play board games and see tv.
