Introduce Yourself - Part 2

I don't know why it never occurred to me that people make their own henna but it makes sense as that way you know what's in it.

I live in Scotland, and am involved in environmental campaigning (and often dragging shopping trollies out of river,s or doing litter picks). It probably ties in to my fiction in some way. And explains why I need escapism. :-)

Welcome Karl!
Goodreads has many great communities, including many opportunities to share your writing as well as interests. I hope you enjoy discovering you niche! Cheers!

Name: Me the Great (a.k.a. John Gaver)
Favorite Books: Sixth Column, Rendezvous With Rama
Favorite Series: Lensman, Stainless Steel Rat
Favorite Genres: Space Opera, Hard SF, Non-Fiction Economics
Favorite TV shows: (The last time I watched regular TV, the original Star Trek was in its first re-run. I'm more likely to watch Perry Mason or the original Star Trek, than watch anything produced since 1980.)
Favorite Movies: "Man From Snowy River", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "Midway", "Star Wars" (1st trilogy), "Space Cowboys", "Lord of the Rings" (trilogy, but not "The Hobbit"), and most movies with (in no particular order) John Wayne, Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, Leslie Caron, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Gene Kelly, Sean Connery, and a whole bunch of other older actors, back when the ability to act was almost a requirement to be in a movie.
Favorite Foods: Scotch, Dark Chocolate (in any form), Rolling Thunder Stout, Veal Marsala, Puligny-Montrachet, Oso Buco
Day Job: Published Author (several non-fiction titles, with a new n-f title coming soon, to be followed by a space opera - no name yet)
Hobbies and Sports: World Travel, Adrenalin Junkie (too old for some of those things now), Electric Unicycle Rider (too old for that, too, but I still do it), Exploring Fine Scotches and Cognacs.
Other: President of the APA (Association for Psychotic Achievement), Life Member of the Benevolent Center for Creative Alcohol Consumption
Personal Philosophy: I'm just excited that I'm the person who gets to be me. If someone else had to do it, he would die of starvation, because he would not be able to stop looking at that handsome devil in the mirror long enough to eat. Did I mention, I'm also insane? But that's OK. Enlightened scientists have recently determined that insanity is not a disease, to be cured, but a gift, to be nourished and developed. Now I know you think you understand what you think I said. But, I'm not sure if you realize that what you think I said is not what I really meant. If you understand that, then you're insane, too, and we can be friends.

Welcome to the group! I hope you enjoy the rest of Cold Equations and Immortal Coil. A couple other recommendations for TOS and TNG related books are the Vanguard series and Federation.

I'm glad to know another Smith fan. Lensman has to be the most epic series of all time. It started before humans existed and ended long after humans were spread across the universe (and visited multiple universes). Absolutely epic.
I wish Smith had finished the Skylark series before his death.
I also think Steven Goldin did a respectable job of turning Smith's "Imperial Stars" novella into the Family D'Alembert series. It was an interesting mixture of Smith's universe and Goldin's expansion of the initial direction of the story. It's obvious that Goldin, though not the intricate story teller that Smith was, tried with a significant degree of success, to stay true to the Smith style.
I just hope that I'm able to be half as successful as Goldin, in emulating Smith's style, in my own science fiction book. The story in that book is complete, but I'm currently going back through it, adding atmosphere and color. The ending is more Arthur C. Clarke, than Smith. The few people who have read it, have told me that the ending knocked their socks off. But the most difficult part is still in the works. I have to come up with an appropriate title that doesn't give away the ending. But to paraphrase the Star Child, "I'll think of something."

Favorite Books: The Frontiers Saga and Expeditionary Force Saga
Favorite Genres: Sci-Fi Space Opera, Action Thrillers and Historical Fiction

Scott Sigler is one of my favorite authors. I'll also rave about Vernor Vinge, as well as some epic fantasy authors such as Robert Jordan and Michael G Manning, and the new crowd coming out of the web serial world, such as The Wandering Inn.
I read very widely, with my current favorite subgenres being dark and thoughtful space opera, progression fantasy, litrpg, epic fantasy, and psychological thrillers. I also read nonfiction memoirs and history.
I don't have a whole lot of time for TV, but I have really enjoyed Umbrella Academy, Outlander, and Only Murders in the Building.
Writing and reading are pretty much my whole life. I do have a day job, and a husband who is working on a indie MMO game. I also come from animation and game dev. I've worked on lots of Nintendo titles.
You can find me online with a search for my name!

I'm Robert, I read all sorts of things but Space Opera is near and dear my heart, whether it's set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away or in the nitty gritty near-future of The Expanse.
Speaking of which, I just finished Persepolis Rising and I'm looking forward to diving into Tiamat's Wrath though before that I will be returning to Pierce Brown's Howlerverse to listen to the full cast reading of Golden Son.

Favorite Books: Alice isn't Dead by Joseph Fink, Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero and Cujo by Stephen King
Favorite Genres: Sci fi, Western, Horror
Favorite TV shows: Supernatural, The Umbrella Academy,
Favorite Movies: Asteroid City, Juno, Star Wars: A New Hope, Brokeback Mountain
Favorite Food: Chicken and corn soup
Day Job: Student
Hobbies: Reading, a multitude of sports, hiking, anything to do with the outdoors
Other: Recently fell back into my Star Wars phase

I'm currently reading through every single Dune book ever written, including the newer (and inferior) Brian/Kevin books. I've read 25 or so and have about 5 left on my list. I don't know much about modern Space Opera from the past 10 or 15 years so I'm hoping to find a few mentions on this tread of what to read next.

Hello and a welcome from the Great White North. I did not realize there was that many Dune books.

Okay, fine, here's the short version. Former high school teacher turned marketing copywriter - I started a business and write for a living. But the plan the whole time was to try to break into screenwriting.
Now, it's shifted to novel writing because Hollywood has forgotten how to make great and original big budget films. (Don't agree? Name 3 from the last 10 years). I've written two in a series, and am now shopping the first one around. The first is a military space opera.
Thus - this group drew my attention.
Favorite Books: Haven't read a ton of fiction in recent years, but am currently reading the Lord of the Rings series - yes, I've never read them. I love Speaker for the Dead and Ender's Game, lots of Asimov's stuff is great.
Favorite Genres: I read a lot of business and marketing books, and I prefer sci-fi for fiction, but am open to other genres too.
Favorite TV shows: Most of them are done now. We watched Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and various others. Currently watching Dark Winds. First two seasons were very good. I guess you could call me an AMC guy, and I loathe streamers and don't subscribe to any of them because I resent the business model. Video stores and traditional TV was WAY better than what we have now.
Favorite Movies: Truman Show, Unbreakable, The Matrix.
Favorite Food: Tacos! I love them almost as much as dragons do (if you don't get the reference and you have kids...go look it up)
Day Job: Marketing copywriter transitioning to published author.
Hobbies: What's a hobby? I don't do anything unless I have a purpose for doing it.

I enjoy a lot of different aspects about multiple genres, but I'm not hopelessly devoted to one genre in particular. I do, however, enjoy the variety and mixture of elements that happens in space operas.
Some things I like are...
writing
playing video games with friends and family
chocolate
walking
TV shows (Stargate SG-1, Fringe, X-Files, Hawaii Five-0 reboot, etc)
I'm looking forward to learning more about this community. Have a lovely day!

Favorite Books: Stormlight Archive, The Expanse, and The Destroyermen series.
Favorite Genres: Sci-Fi (Space Opera, Alien Contact, and Alternate Earth), High Fantasy, Naval History
Favorite TV shows: Stargate, Battlestar Gallactica, Star Trek
Day Job: Fleet Manager in Transportation Operations
Hobbies: Other than reading, Gaming (both tabletop and videogames), Amateur Radio, riding Harley
Here to get more ideas for my absurd TBR and hear what others think about books I have read or may read at same time with the monthly picks.

Along with that, some of my other most favorable books include anything written by Anne Rice, Game of Thrones, the Outlander series, various Star Wars series, many many more, and overall most things fantasy.
I don't watch a lot of TV or movies, but I do love all of the nerdy classics.
I'm an aspiring tattoo artist currently working for a (legal) marijuana warehouse run by my family.
As to my hobbies, I have a lot. Reading is a given, but most of them are art related. Love to work across a wide variety of mediums such as painting, drawing, embroidery, wire wrapping/jewelry making, and I also make my own henna. I love music as well and am a frequent concert/festival goer. I was also a theatre kid in high school, so musicals/plays will always hold a special place in my heart. Very into comics, Magic the Gathering, and lots of tabletop games. Not the gym type, but I do love to roller skate and hike/be outdoors often.
