Favorite Books: The Culture series by Banks, anything by Philip K. Dick, The Gap cycle (is it the only space opera to be explicitly inspired by a real opera? Donaldson cites Wagners ring-cycle as his source material)
Favorite Genres: Space opera, dystopias, galactic empires.
Favorite TV shows: Any Star Trek; The Orville; Big Bang Theory
Favorite Movies: Blade Runner, Cube
Favorite Food: Oi, that's between me and Deliveroo (hush, nobody can know how many deliveries I get a month)
Day Job: Enterprise architect at a VC firm; writer
Hobbies: Writing, software development.
Other: Waiting for my first novel to be published (due out ~October), editing my second, and started planning out the third - they're part of a first of what's planned to be 10-12 6-book cycles (so 60-72 books... yes, I'm insane to plan that far ahead) charting humanity's first step into interstellar space, and major interstellar war.
EDIT: Donaldson, not Stephenson.. Gah...

My favorite books tend to change over time and with my mood, but I’ve been incredibly impressed by the Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson and the Frontlines series by Marko Kloos. There is always space in my reading list for a Discworld novel every now and then, plus the Remembrance of Earth’s Past series is amazing (and bleak). Not to mention the Commonwealth stuff by Peter F. Hamilton. These lead somewhat into my preferred genre which is military SF. I’ve never quite understood why that takes such a hold on me, maybe it was reading Starship Troopers as a teen or watching Airwolf – who knows?
Regarding favorite TV shows, that’s a difficult question as there is so much that’s great about stuff recently and there’s so much about old stuff that doesn’t quite hold muster in the modern day. Recently there was The Good Place, which was an incredible and intelligent watch. The Expanse is obviously a masterful piece of work (as are the novels – I shall be sad when the last one comes out next year). Dark is also a fine series, although the final season did leave a bit to be desired. Star Trek: Lower Decks just finished it’s first season, and the final was as good an episode of Trek as you will find (okay, fine, it’s not The Inner Light, but what is?). Away on Netflix was a recent positive find and did things with the story that I did not expect – that’s probably worth a bit of your time.
Film wise, if I’m scrolling through channels and come across one of the Resident Evil movies I will end up watching the rest of it, from wherever it is. The same can be said for The Fifth Element, or any of the Cornetto Trilogy. Other than that I’ve moved away from movies as television is producing higher quality entertainment by allowing story arcs to rise and fall over time which creates a much more interesting viewing experience for me.
Welcome Nic! I’m a software developer myself and have to deal with SQL Server regularly at work.

Thanks, Teresa. 20 years into using SQL Server and while I am lacking hair from yanking it all out, it does still pay the bills.

i wanted to join the group to see what it is like. its my first goodread group.
thanks anyway!

I'm one of those kids who grew up on Star Trek (the original series, thank you). It came on at 4:30 p.m. every weekday afternoon right after the Brady Bunch, and watching it was part of my after-school ritual. My two favorite episodes were "The Doomsday Machine" and "Balance of Terror." In the summer of 1977, I read a paperback version of Star Wars (which was amazing), and then saw the movie shortly thereafter (which was even MORE amazing). In 1979 when I was in junior high, Battlestar Galactica hit the tube, and it was on every Sunday night for a couple of years. I loved Star Trek, but there was something a little more "realistic" and “gritty” about Galactica—and especially Star Wars—that really resonated with me. The ships, the fighters, the gallant warriors and the terrible villains, all great stuff. The follow-ons as the years went by were great, too. The 2004 version of Battlestar Galactica was probably one of my favorite shows ever. Anyone remember "Space: Above and Beyond" from 1995-96? Another great show, in my opinion.
My favorite mil sci fi books would have to be the Blood on the Stars series by Jay Allan, the Frontlines series by fellow 47North author Marko Kloos, and the Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell.
I'm a science fiction author, both traditionally published and indie, but I won't talk about that here. ;)
Welcome Chuck! There are places in our group where self promotion is allowed. You are allowed to nominate your own book for our group read for that matter as long ask you keep the nomination comment short (title and author will always be safe).

I'm a science fiction junkie, forever chasing the high I got from my first time. I read Dune as a kid, still green to the genre, and that book shaped the very way I conceive science fiction—not to mention, it set the bar pretty damn high.
I love stories that live within the cracks of a world and are able to illuminate its structure as they proceed. I love the sense of reward of finally seeing the complete picture and realize everything you read was part of a unified design. I probably love it for the same reason some folks love conspiracy theories. We need meaning after all, don't we? We hope for meaning.
I'm the process of finalizing my own space opera. The process can get pretty lonely at times—I'm sure quite a few of you know—so I decided to come here to breath in some energy, some inspiration, and some criticism, should it arrive to that. I can only hope I'll be able to give something back in return.
Whatever the case, thank you for keeping people together and passion alive. It's not a small thing.
Luca Rubinato

My name is Taniko Williams, and I am an aspiring author from Australia. I primarily write young adult novels, and my very first book was recently released.
My favorite genres are space opera, hardcore sci fi and fantasy which are the main genres I am writing in.
I do enjoy some contemporary romance and paranormal romance, but have found it to be rather overtaken recently by erotic content with very little actual story.
I don't watch a lot of TV, as I find it hard to immerse myself in visual content. My mind is very active, and reading lets me keep it a lot more occupied.
I was previously working at a dry cleaner, but some health issues and the rental crisis brought on by the current pandemic made my twenty-six year old self go scrambling back into the nest. I am now with the support of my family, trying to achieve the one thing I've always dreamed of, but lacked the confidence to until recently.
