This book is a YA book that takes place on a not earth world. It starts with a boy and his mentor. The main character then goes on a quest. His powers are that he can see the footprints of everyone who walked in the area he's looking at. I believe that each footprint has a specific aura so he can tell who made. He also can see footprints dated very far back. On the quest he is joined by other people with magical powers. I believe that this is the first book in a serious and I read it around 6-4 years ago. I think the cover of the book was mostly black.

Maybe Pathfinder? He can see footprints and later on in the book he joins up with one or two others that have special abilities.
