This is a dual story line. The main story follows a modern family torn apart by tragedy and war fleeing from Syria after their home is destroyed. The parallel story follows what feels like an epic or legend from a long, long time ago.

The main character is Nour, a young girl who is born in America to Syrian parents. After the death of her father, her mother moves her and her two older sisters back to Syria.

Their lives are upended by war and they become refugees. The rest of the book tells the story of their efforts to stay together and alive, and the reunite with family in a safe country.

This book was beautifully written, but some parts were so heartbreaking it was hard to read at times.

I found myself immersed in this story, and yet I had to set it aside and take it in, in small doses. A 5🌟 for me- Glad you enjoyed it.
