SOLVED. Adult Fantasy novel probably published a while ago (70's-90's maybe?) about two adult women who have to save a hidden land ruled by a tyrant i think? Spoilers ahead. [s]

so these two middle-aged women (one divorced, which is a plot point) go on a vacation together and they find a hidden land ruled by this tyrant and they were destined to come there and save it? and also one of them has this book that literally is the land that talks to them as a sentient being? they both save it but one of them is actually connected to the land and stays in the end while the other goes back home fulfilled i think? i was so young when i read this sorry, (probs in the 2000's?) i've been searching for years with no luck. i seem to remember a cover with an angry dude holding an unconscious woman (ew). it was old when i read it, that much i know.
