Dirk Van | 4551 comments Wrong Chris, not Thomas Eakins.
He died in 1916, six years before the portrait above was painted.

Chris Gager (chrisinmaine) | 375 comments How 'bout Bellows, then?

message 6: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 4551 comments Nope, not Bellows either.
keep in mind this is again a tricky one: this artist is famous for a completely different style.
The portrait is a self portrait at age 19.

Connie G (connie_g) | 456 comments The self portrait looks a bit like Mark Rothko, although the artwork is not what I would associate with him.

They certainly knew each other, I believe they met the first time in 1943.

Mark Rothko on the left, the artist we're looking for in the middle on the right an art curator.

Dirk Van | 4551 comments Correct Gino! And before I posted some of his more known work!

Here some of those, first from the surrealistic period and then the abstract:

Dirk Van | 4551 comments And the poem was by Emily Dickinson:

How happy is the little stone
That rambles in the road alone,
And doesn't care about careers,
And exigencies never fears;
Whose coat of elemental brown
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree
In casual simplicity.
