I see a lot of similarities between C.S. Lewis' writing and Tolkein's writing... except that Tolkein isn't as preachy... and there's no misogyny... no undercurrent of racism... and it's just kind of better (in my opinion).

I like how Gandalf is like, "Bilbo, go on this quest and leave your home and family behind. And return the horses even though you're entering the big scary forest. And now I leave you. Good luck. Don't die. See you sometime in the future, maybe?"

I love that Tolkein writes about the scariest creatures... goblins... dragons... orcs... spiders haha.

Thorin came around in the end for Bilbo, though I do feel bad for Fili and Kili... Again, with the eagles flying in and saving everyone. Tolkein must have really liked eagles. I don't remember Gandalf being as absent in the movies as he seems to be in the book.
