I just finished The Astonishing Life of After by Emily X. R. Pan and it was one of the best books I read this year. Trigger warning for this book is suicide.
Leigh is positive that her mother, who just committed suicide, turned into a bird.
Leigh knows next to nothing about her mother's past and convinces her father to take her to Taiwan to meet her grandparents. While there Leigh searches for the red bird her mother has become. Leigh has also fled her best friend, who she kissed on the day of her mother's death. Is there something there, was it a mistake?
This book entwines Magical realism, Korean culture, and a young girl's quest for the truth.

Lori, I just read that one, too! I thought it was a really nice story. I'm loving all the books coming out about children with disabilities who don't let their disability define or hinder them from living a normal life.
