I find it funny that Mary is so against her sister-in-law marrying Charles Hayter, yet fawns over Captain Wentworth. He probably was similarly unconnected and poor before he started his military career. And I guess we see why Anne ultimately decided to give up on the engagement when she's surrounded by people who say things like Mary does, "I do not think any young woman has a right to make a choice that may be disagreeable and inconvenient to the principal part of her family, and be giving bad connections to those who have not been used to them."
