They can be marked 'advanced reader copy' in the edition field and in the book description. Not sure how this applies to pub date, but I would guess that it should be set to the actual publication date of the officially released copy. Otherwise the original pub date would revert to the earlier ARC release date, which is highly misleading and unlikely to be known.
Any other librarians want to weigh in on this?
an ARC is treated as a different edition - we can combine multiple editions into one record

I sometimes add the ARC publication date to the description (if known), but leave the actual publication blank. A lot of the time the ARC doesn't have a definite publication date like a regular edition.

how are drafts handled? Some publishers give away free, uncorrected and unrevised editions before the publishing date. These drafts often enough have a different ISBN than the final publication.
eg. ISBN 9783257862270 is the draft edition of the definitive publication with ISBN 9783257068337.
Our national library also has recorded the definite ISBN: http://d-nb.info/102826688X
Thanks for your advice!
