I read these books in middle school where this guy is in some other dark world/dimension and almost gets killed by these monster but survives in the first book. There was also some fruit that was mentioned a lot throughout the series that was described as the most delicious food. Sorry this is very vague but just decided to give this a shot.

Terry Goodkind wrote a series titled "Legend of the Seeker". The first book is titled "The Sword of Truth". In the first novel the hero and the heroin (A Confessor) are chased across "The Wall" by creatures. Apples in this realm are made poisoned by a magical spell, and feature in several scenes in the first book.
