ABANDONED. I Forgot This Book's Title

This book was about a boy who found a stray dog in his town and becomes friends with it. The town was on top of some ancient Roman or Spartan civilization. The cover was an illustration of the night sky with a single shooting star in the middle with the boy wearing a spartan helmet and the dog next to him looking up at the shooting star. It was probably a children's chapter book. I read it around 2015.
