Fishface | 18816 comments Which statement about Tituba, the accuser of many of the people hanged as witches in Salem, Massachusetts back in the day, is true?

A) Tituba was an African slave belonging to primary accuser Ann Putnam's family
B) Tituba was, in fact, a practitioner of the black arts who got away clean by accusing others after she was exposed by Ann Putnam
C) Tituba caused the convulsions and other anomalous behaviors displayed by the Afflicted Girls, which is why they accused her of witchcraft in the first place
D) Tituba cauised her own problems by telling crazy stories to the Puritan girls she was caring for
E) This is is all nonsense

Diane in Australia | 640 comments No idea, but I'll take a guess.

Fishface | 18816 comments DING DING DING! E is correct! Tituba was an Arawak Amerindian kidnapped from what is now Venezuela and sold into slavery to the Puritans. A bunch of drama queen girls, including the daughter of her owner, the Reverend Parris, started a fad of going into convulsions and claiming demons did it. They accused Tituba of witchcraft, probably because they were also catty little whatevers, and Tituba was tortured into telling them absolutely anything they wanted to hear, including accusing any random person whose name she could remember of being fellow witches. The authorities were quite pleased. After more than a few of these people were hanged, she retracted her story and was eventually released due to lack of evidence. How that changed things in the Parris household from then on is hard to imagine.

Diane in Australia | 640 comments I almost went with (E) for my first guess. Interesting info, Fish, thanks.
