I love seeing Light encounter his intellectual match. For someone else, this might trigger a reconsideration about whether or not what he's doing is really just, but yeah, he's too caught up in his own head to see this as anything but a challenge against his righteous justice.
I love L. He is just the best! In the chapter you really start to see Light's weakness. He may be clever but he has a lot of pride. He couldn't ignore a taunt and now L is on his scent.
L's introduction was genious! The way 'Kira' played into his hands was perfect =))
One detail that bothered me a little is the fact that Light had the biggest moment of stupidity, going against his own rule. He saw someone wanting to go against him and he imediately tried to kill him. The problem here is that he started up as 'I want to get rid of bad people!' but here he killed someone that he didn't know if he was innocent or not... I guess his arrogance bit him in the backside =))
Still though, I'm not sure if Light is sane anymore at this point, considering he basically went against his own philosophy.

I think Light so quickly going against his own rules shows that he isn't the paragon of virtue and logic he thinks he is. He's a person who, despite all his intelligence and careful planning, can still react with emotion when someone tries to stand up to him. You'd think that would maybe clue him in to his own faults, but he's obviously too stuck in his own head to learn a lesson like that.
First off, I don't understand how Light doesn't somehow suffer from burnout. He's going to regular school and night classes, sleeping around 8 hours, doing all of his homework, and "working" in the Death Note the rest of the time. I need his skills. Anyway, I think he is already being overtaken by his new power and beginning to turn into a villain. As stated above, he doesn't seem to be suffering from burnout with everything going on. I have to think that would be psychologically impossible unless he had something that he considered fun or relaxing in his day (I'm not a psychologist or anything so correct me if I'm wrong). He already doesn't seem to enjoy his classes/homework because in the first scene he's in, he's daydreaming out of the window. I have to believe that this fun/relaxing thing for him is the Death Note... I feel like he is taking enjoyment from the deaths of the people. This is why I think he is starting to become a villain.
I've seen the anime and L is my favorite character. You'll see why (other than the fact that he stands on the moral side that I prefer). He's freaking awesome.
I think it's interesting how much pride Light takes in being noticed by people as Kira. This shows that he's has a big ego. This is supported when he can't back down from L's taunts. It's interesting that he started out just a chapter ago wanting to make the world a better place, a noble goal. Now he finds pride in it.
I also liked the part where Light was telling Ryuk about how if there was a class discussion on if killing bad people was wrong or not, everyone would say that it's wrong because that's the proper thing to say. Though a significant percentage of those people wouldn't necessarily think that it's wrong in all situations. It touches on the fact that everyone has a certain amount of pride. And it shows that just because something is the "proper" belief doesn't mean that it is right in everyone's eyes. I found that part interesting.
I think L isn’t a character that has really appeared yet. We do know he’s the man sitting in the floor though we have no idea who he is. I definitely think he’s a character who we haven’t been introduced too yet. I also agree with that statement above. I can’t believe how quickly this has gone to lights head and how he managed to kill so many people already! He should of also killed criminals from all over in other country’s to avoid being found out so fast.
I loved the way L was introduced. You can kinda feel how respected he is when he could convince the Interpol to center the investigation in Japan. And the little trap he set for Light was incredible! I hope he ends up being as amazing as he promises to be. Light makes me sad. It just sounds like he's playing a video game, and has no idea of the fact that he is actually killing people. At least he is still studying and trying to have a healthy sleep schedule, so... not that bad I guess?
